“As long as you’re dancing, you can break the rules. Sometimes breaking the rules is just extending the rules. Sometimes there are no rules.” - Mary Oliver, “Three Things to Remember

Hello friends! Rules were made to be broken, right? At least some rules, some of the time. Otherwise nothing changes! The corollary is, learn the rules so you can break them with skill.

Here are my photo choices for today:

August 17, 2026
The little prince who has deemed himself in charge of my feeder for the last week or so. Poor guy, he’s exhausted from chasing everyone off!
Mockingbird apparently didn’t like this branch…
…so he hopped to another one! I’m amazed how often birds hop rather than fly.
“Is that an intruder? No, just a bee. Ok bee, you may pass.”
Shake it off.
I’m always amazed how little barbed wire bothers birds.
Red overlooking her kingdom.
Why did all the meadowlarks disappear? Ope. Yep. Kestrel.
I’m convinced goldfinches love fall as much as I do. Seeds!
The highs and lows of flickerdom.
Still some young meadowlarks around, at least when the kestrel isn’t present.
Still some barn swallows around. They should be migrating through for quite a while now.
Widow skimmer male.
Widow skimmer female. For years I thought they were “window skimmers” because I thought their wings had “windows”.
That burst of red when they open their wings! (red admiral)
Grasshopper colors are so interesting. Look at those blue eyes!
Hearts are everywhere in nature when you start looking for them.
Dew drops are one of my favorite parts of this time of year.

May you find a way to dance through your week.
