What a difference a decade makes...

Last night, I found myself watching the Disney movie “Moana” with my family. I’m sure you’ve heard of that one before but just in case…

…it’s basically about a girl named Moana who saves the world. I won’t go into a “movie summary” here too much because I’m sure most of you are familiar with this movie...

...and on top of that if you REALLY want to know what the movie is about, you can quickly do a google search and watch a trailer.

Besides…

…that has very little to do with what I want to talk about here. Instead I want to talk about the often overlooked art of “prospect perspective.”

That is to say, there is very much a “right place, right time, right person” kind of thing at work when it comes to what you do with your online business.

And that is why, in my view, it’s not a great idea to change things around all the time. Because as you repel those who don’t like your style and attract those who do…

…what you might not realize is that the longer you stick around, and stay consistent, the more you will start to see people who might not have been drawn to your way of thinking before…

…come around to your way of thinking now. And vice versa. People change.

But that being said…what the heck does any of that have to do with Moana?

Well, I was watching this movie last night with my family, and what I noticed…I mean, what struck me as really interesting was how much “feminist propaganda” was littered throughout this movie.

And I say that, from the viewpoint of someone who watched this in 2016 when my kids were much younger and I didn’t even notice it.

Back then, all I saw was a “Disney” kids movie. I didn’t think much about it beyond “Disney Princess saves the day.” It was something for kids.

But watching it last night, I saw it in a whole new light.

It was like at every turn, the men in the movie were diminished. Made to look stupid, arrogant, and incompetent, while the women were constantly put on pedestals and could do no wrong.

Consider that one of the characters in that movie was a literal DEMIGOD named Māui. This guy is a real and deeply revered cultural hero, trickster, and demigod from traditional Polynesian mythology.

But in the movie?

He was reduced to an arrogant, incompetent, “man baby” who didn’t get loved by his parents and the whole movie proceeded to do nothing right. Literally having to be rescued by Moana time and time again.

It was kind of sad.

He was even lectured by her, and given a speech by her at one point. A pep talk to get him to stop feeling sorry for himself.

Imagine that. An immortal demigod over a thousand years old, had to be given a “Your hook doesn’t make you who you are” pep talk by a teenage girl.

It was preposterous.

And in the end? Of course it was Moana who put the heart of Ta fiti back, and NOT the Demigod who took it in the first place.

Moana was basically a “Mary Sue Girl Boss” who had to do everything, and diminish anything that even looked close to a man.

Ultimately, Māui was forced to apologize to Te Fiti (who by the way, is not even a real goddess, from mythology at all. Disney made her up. I guess they needed a few more “girl bosses.”)

I could go on and on about this. I found the movie quite annoying. Although, I didn’t want to ruin the movie for my family, so no need to yap about it out loud…

…and I won’t go on and on about it here.

The point I want to make is that in 2016, when I first saw this movie? I picked up on NONE of that.

It was all there. It was all done intentionally. But I just wasn’t really paying attention to it back then.

I suppose things just got worse and worse at ol’ Disney, to where even a big dumb animal like ME started to notice things. And once I started “noticing things” I couldn’t UN-notice them.

And now when I go back and watch those movies from a few years back? I see they were doing the same crap back then too, even if it was done a touch more classy than what was to come.

So yeah, Moana is horrible (overrated) and I heard the second one is even worse.

Now…don’t get me wrong. I understand I am not the target audience. And the target audience (little girls) loved Moana, and probably the sequel as well.

And that’s all well and good. Although I will say that if you look at a classic movie like Star Wars, I don’t remember them having to diminish the likes of Princess Leia to make Luke Skywalker look cool.

It never happened.

They didn’t have to make Princess Jasmine look like a moron for Aladdin to be a hero in their animated version of Aladdin from the 90s. So…

…I think their recent brand of storytelling is wearing it’s unique brand of radical man hating feminism a little too “on the sleeve” for my liking. However…

…the point of all this is not really to make you AGREE with me over some dumb animated movie from 10 years ago. The point is…

…I am a person who saw this very movie 10 years ago, and saw it in a completely different way. Why?

Not because the movie changed, but my perspective did. Now movies have it easy don‘t they? They get made, and they are what they are.

You and your business however, have the unique challenge of trying to make sure you have a good understanding about the point of your business, what to move around, what to drop, and what to NEVER change.

Your customers are going to come and go and come back again, but me? I strive to be as much of a light house in the storm as possible.
