A close friend of mine has an interesting combination of professional experience: Army infantry officer + social worker. It gives him unique perspective on how to approach life’s challenges, and he recently shared this:
“When you’re emotionally cold and wet, and, and you feel like you’re waiting for the next thing in your life to happen, find something to direct your energy toward.
When you’re upset because of someone else’s behavior, find a behavior of your own you can improve.
When you’re anxious or depressed about your situation, do something small to improve your situation.
Often the smaller the better. Take a shower. Do some push-ups. Schedule the thing. Then work up to routines. Start taking a multivitamin. Start a $5 automatic deduction into an investment account. Eat more vegetables. Improvements tend to compound.
Few things help as much as momentum. Especially if you think the enemy is likely to attack.
How have you been improving your foxhole lately?”
