Modeling a Kitchen or Bathroom in SketchUp: The Interior Designer's Workflow

Kitchen and bathroom projects are where SketchUp earns its keep for interior designers. They are the two rooms where clients are most opinionated, dimensions matter most, and the cost of a mistake — one misplaced cabinet bank, one fixture that does not clear the door swing — is highest. A solid SketchUp workflow lets you catch those problems in 3D before they become problems on site. This guide walks through the complete process: setting up the room shell correctly, sourcing and placing cabinets and fixtures from 3D Warehouse, applying materials and lighting, and exporting a presentation that actually moves a client to approve the design.

Every kitchen or bathroom model lives or dies by its room shell. Before you touch a cabinet or a tile material, you need walls, floor, and ceiling at correct dimensions — not approximate, not "close enough."

The fastest approach: Draw the floor plan first using the Rectangle tool, then Push/Pull it to ceiling height. Use the Tape Measure tool to set guide lines at window sill height, window head height, and door opening height before you cut any openings. This order matters. If you cut openings first and then realize your wall thickness is wrong, you will be remodeling every opening.

Wall thickness for interiors: Residential interior partition walls are typically 4.5 inches (3.5-inch stud plus two layers of 0.5-inch drywall). Exterior walls run 6.5 inches or more depending on insulation. Get this right from the start.

Pro tip: If you have an architectural drawing or site survey in DWG format, import it into SketchUp as a reference. Use File > Import, select the DWG file, bring it in at the correct scale, trace over the key walls, then discard the import layer. This eliminates transcription errors and anchors your model to real dimensions from day one.

Watch out for: Reversed normals. After Push/Pull, orbit inside the room and check that white faces point inward. Right-click and select Reverse Faces on any blue-grey faces — reversed normals cause textures to disappear or flicker in renders.

Before the first component hits the model, set up your tag structure. Kitchen and bathroom models get complex fast — wall cabinets, base cabinets, countertops, appliances, fixtures, tile, trim. If everything lives on the default "Untagged" layer, you cannot hide appliances to review just the cabinetry, or show just tile to discuss finishes with a client.

A practical tag set for a kitchen or bathroom project:

  • Architecture — walls, floor slab, ceiling

  • Cabinets-Base — all lower cabinet units

  • Cabinets-Upper — wall-hung cabinets and uppers

  • Countertops — countertop slabs, backsplash

  • Appliances — refrigerator, range, dishwasher, etc.

  • Fixtures — sink, faucet, toilet, tub, shower

  • Tile — floor tile, wall tile, shower tile

  • Trim-Millwork — crown molding, toe kicks, panel moldings

  • Lighting — pendant lights, recessed cans, under-cabinet strips

  • Annotations — dimensions, notes (visible in LayOut only)

Create these tags in the Tags panel before you begin modeling. Assign each group or component to its tag immediately after placement. Do not batch-tag at the end of a project — by then you have forgotten what half the components are.

Pro tip: Use Tag Folders in SketchUp 2021 and later to group related tags. A "Cabinetry" folder containing Cabinets-Base, Cabinets-Upper, and Countertops makes the tag list manageable on large projects.

3D Warehouse is the fastest way to populate a kitchen or bathroom model, but quality varies enormously. A careless download can add 50,000 unnecessary faces and crash your rendering session.

Best search terms for kitchens: "base cabinet 36 inch," "wall cabinet 30 inch," "kitchen island," "undermount sink," "range hood." Look for components with high download counts (10K+) and recent upload dates.

Before you place any downloaded component: Open it in a separate SketchUp file, check face count via Window > Model Info > Statistics, purge unused materials and components, and look for unnecessary detail. If a simple cabinet box exceeds 5,000 faces, find an alternative.

The substitution trick: Find a geometrically clean component, then add your own door geometry. This lets you use a clean structural model while customizing visible surfaces.

Watch out for: Nested groups with double geometry. Some 3D Warehouse cabinets contain both a low-poly and high-poly version nested inside each other. Delete the high-poly nest — it kills render performance without benefiting design review.

Place cabinets using SketchUp's Move tool with inference snapping — do not type random coordinates. Here is the sequence that keeps everything aligned:

Kitchen workflow: Place base cabinets along one wall first using guides at 34.5 inches (standard US countertop height). Array repeated units with Move + Ctrl. Add the countertop slab (1.5 inches thick, 1.5-inch overhang) as a separate component. Place upper wall cabinets at 54 inches above finished floor. Place appliances last — a refrigerator with opening doors immediately communicates clearance to clients.

Bathroom workflow: Establish the wet zone boundary first with a floor slab. Place toilet and check centerline clearance (minimum 15 inches from center to side wall, 18 inches preferred). Place vanity and sink, then shower fixtures — head height and valve height are what matter, not fixture detail at this stage.

Pro tip: Save your cleaned cabinet components into a local library folder. Open this folder in the Components panel under "In Model" and reuse trusted components across projects without revisiting 3D Warehouse.

A kitchen or bathroom render lives or dies on materials. The three surfaces clients focus on most are countertops, tile, and cabinet fronts. Get those three right and the rest of the space reads convincingly.

Countertops: Use a high-resolution stone or quartz texture (2048×2048 minimum). Set the texture scale in the Materials panel to match real slab dimensions — approximately 120 × 26 inches. Apply the material to the countertop slab group, not individual faces, for consistent mapping.

Tile: Create a single tile unit as a component, apply your texture, then array it using Move + Ctrl. Use thin grey rectangular borders to simulate grout lines. This gives you a controllable tile grid — change grout color or swap tile texture by editing one component.

Cabinet fronts: Apply a wood texture with grain perpendicular to the floor for vertical-grain doors, horizontal for flat-slab modern cabinets. Use right-click > Texture > Position to align grain direction on each door face.

Watch out for: Stretching textures on non-square faces. Use the free pin mode in Texture Position to manually adjust all four corners on diagonal cuts or angled walls.

Even a basic lighting setup transforms a kitchen or bathroom model from diagram to design. You do not need a full renderer for a usable result — SketchUp's native Shadows feature combined with a good scene setup produces convincing presentation images.

Native SketchUp shadows: Set your geographic location (Window > Model Info > Geo-location) and adjust shadow time to morning or mid-afternoon. Orient the kitchen so the window faces south or southeast — this casts natural shadow patterns across the countertop that show depth.

If you are using Lumion LiveSync or Enscape: Set a warm artificial light source above the countertop (simulating pendants or under-cabinet strips) and a cooler ambient source from the window. The contrast between warm kitchen light and cool natural light reads as professional in renderings.

Scene setup for presentation: Create four scenes minimum — overview (isometric or 3/4 view), sink zone close-up, cooking zone close-up, and a first-person view at 65 inches Z. For bathrooms: overview, vanity close-up, shower/tub zone, and toilet zone. Do not skip the toilet zone — in small bathrooms, clearance is the design challenge.

SketchUp Scenes for client review: Each scene becomes a tab in the SketchUp window. Orbit smoothly between scenes using the Scene panel — avoid live orbiting during presentations, as clients interpret the motion as the designer searching rather than showing.

LayOut for documentation: Drag your SketchUp model into a LayOut template. Assign different scenes to different viewports. Add a scale bar, north arrow, and dimension strings to confirm cabinet widths. This produces a single PDF the client can sign off on — far more defensible than a collection of screenshots.

Best for: High-end residential kitchens and bathrooms where the client expects professional deliverables. LayOut elevates SketchUp presentations from 3D sketches to professional documents.

Export for renders: If sending to Lumion, run CleanUp³ first to merge coplanar faces and remove duplicate geometry. Tag everything correctly — Lumion LiveSync uses SketchUp tags to assign materials. An untagged model is a three-hour headache in Lumion that fifteen minutes of SketchUp cleanup prevents.

Mistake 1 — Modeling cabinetry at full detail too early. Many designers spend hours on shelves, drawer guides, and hinges before the layout is approved. Use box placeholders until the client approves the overall arrangement, then add detail.

Mistake 2 — Ignoring door swings. A refrigerator door that swings into the pathway, or a bathroom door that hits the toilet, is the most preventable design error SketchUp can catch. Every door should open in your model. At minimum, draw the swing arc as a guide.

Mistake 3 — Applying materials to raw geometry. If you apply a tile material directly to a Push/Pull face rather than to a group, it can spread to adjacent faces. Always group first, then apply materials to the group wrapper.

Mistake 4 — Too many uncleaned components from 3D Warehouse. A kitchen with twelve downloaded appliances, none audited, can reach 2–3 million faces. The model becomes sluggish, renders take forever, and Lumion import fails. The rule: every component from 3D Warehouse gets opened and checked before entering the main model.

Kitchen and bathroom projects reward the designer who builds a disciplined SketchUp workflow. The effort you invest in a dimensionally accurate room shell, a clear tag structure, and clean components pays back in client confidence, fewer revision rounds, and renders that actually look like the space you intend to build. SketchUp does not design for you — but it removes the uncertainty that causes expensive mistakes. Set it up right, and it becomes the most useful tool in your interior design process.
