Dear Readers, this week’s update is from my image notebook — another installment of Photos in a Minor Key.
Some photographs feel like minor key chords to me — tender, nostalgic, sometimes dramatic, always a little unresolved. This periodic series presents the photographic frames that like notes in a minor key, don’t quite belong anywhere else. Call them the B-sides that linger— accompanied by the feelings that the songs evoke.
This month’s installment is in F minor. Glenn Gould, one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, once said that if he could be any key, he’d be F minor. I can see why. It’s a saucy key that lives somewhere between complicated and secure.
Sade’s “Nothing Can Come Between Us“ is the perfect representation of F minor. It’s soulful, smooth as Sade always is. The theme is built around staying grounded with your partner—”in the middle of the madness”. The lyrics have been highly critiqued for their simplicity: “It’s about faith. It’s about trust.” But to me, they celebrate a quiet, steadfast life where external pressures cannot disrupt the emotional safety between two people.
In my last post, I mentioned being ok with just practicing without a goal. In fact, being “goal-less” seems to be blending well with my inner homebody this month. I’m spending more time with my partner, curating my personal music collection, and in the mornings, photographing the backyard birds.
It’s just life happening in the safety of our nest on quiet summer mornings. No dramatic monochrome shots, no alluring reflections and nothing that leaps into a big story. Just tender, every day moments I felt with sweet creatures. That’s what makes F minor feel appropriate.
