US magazine Rolling Stone has released an investigation into the comedian Reggie Watts today.
In it, journalist Cheyenne Roundtree talks to five women who have previously dated Watts and the family of Katherine McCollough who split up with Watts last autumn and subsequently took her own life in March.
All of the women describe relationships in which drug taking was strongly encouraged by him, ketamine in particular, and McCollough’s family say that by the time the relationship ended, she’d gone from occasional recreational drug use to a full-on ketamine addiction.
They say Watts dumped McCollough after she had a manic episode and was admitted to a psych ward after she took a strong psychedelic substance with him. It was not long after the death of her father.
There is so much to this story but the thing I come back to again and again is the multiple stories which feature the same pattern. He allegedly idealises them, starts to find fault with them and then eventually dicards them. If I see a pattern, I find it incredibly hard to un-see it.
Reggie Watts is 54 and highly regarded in the comedy world. It’ll be interesting to see how those who look up to him respond to this story.
I’m writing a longer piece about it, but the video (for paid subscribers) is just some initial thoughts I had on reading the piece.
If you’re interested in stand-up comedy, narcissistic abuse or you’re just a sucker for a toxic love story that turns into an all-out thriller, please…
