UPDATE, 7/24: This event is sold out. Stay tuned for more events!

Subscribers: Join me and award-winning documentarian, sociologist, and local restaurateur Zeynep Kiliç for an intimate five-course Turkish dinner with wines paired by La Bodega and conversation-starters — some of them edible 😋 — meant to spur table talk about how immigration and subsistence culture shape how we eat here.

As we enjoy a meal from Türkiye — where food carries influences from Central Asia, the Mediterranean, the Middle East and the Balkans — we’ll uses Post-it-length writing exercises to learn about our dinner companions and examine how concepts like origin, authenticity and iteration shape Anchorage’s unique food culture. For those from elsewhere and from rural Alaska, what foods, recipes and techniques do we carry with us to the city? How does the city change them? What is Anchorage cuisine?

The dinner is August 4 at 6:30 p.m. at Sofra, Zeynep’s newest restaurant, 1443 W Northern Lights Blvd. Ticket are $120. Seating is limited. Reserve your spot.

Menu:

Hummus. Hummus, prepared in a style associated with the borderlands of Türkiye and Syria. Served with garlic naan.

Yaprak Sarma. Stuffed grape leaves, prepared Antep-style, served with yogurt.

Gavurdağı Salad. Fresh tomato and walnut salad with pomegranate molasses.

Şaşlik Kebabi. Tenderloin marinated in soy and cream. Served with red onion, grilled tomato, grilled pepper and bulgur pilaf.

Künefe & Maraş ice cream. Kunefe with kadayif, fine shredded pastry, layered with cheese, soaked in a simple syrup and sprinkled with Antep pistachios. Maraş ice cream made with milk, mastic and salep.
