The concern I have right now today, you know, we have so many things pulling on us from so many different directions, and it’s hard to know where to put our attentions and what things are going to affect us personally, each and every one of us, most significantly. And I thought it was interesting when you were playing Paul Harvey just a second ago, and I thought about the very first time that I ever heard Paul Harvey. And I was in Shelby, Montana, flyover country.
We were right in the middle of the negotiations to put missile basing, MX missiles up in that part of the world.
And so in the course of that, I went into town a number of times, had friends there, and we went to a restaurant. It was a local little restaurant in Shelby, Montana. I hope you have some listeners out there, the great folks up there. But it was very homey. It was, for me, a city kid, the smallest town I think I’d ever actually been in in my entire life.
And if not the smallest, the smallest that I had stayed and interacted for any period of time in. And in the restaurant, when I came in, they had a table, and it was kind of a big round table. And in the middle of the table, they had a Lazy Susan. And a Lazy Susan is kind of on ball bearings. It can roll around, and stuff gets put in there. You grab pieces off it or whatever. And it was kind of a morning breakfast thing. And so literally she’d come out and put eggs and bacon and the various stuff right in the middle of the Lazy Susan. You just roll the thing around, put some on your plate, and sit at the table. And there was about, I recall, 10 or 12 seats. And so you had the farmer, the car dealer, the guy that ran the pharmacy who was a friend of mine.
You had the business people from town, and you had just people that worked there in town that were all there at the table. And we sat there, and over the course of an hour, having a cup of coffee, people come, people go. But we’d have all those people coming in there, and that was a daily routine for them. If you didn’t come into town, even if it was just to have a cup of coffee and visit for a minute or two in the course of running your errands, the day wasn’t complete. And what you did was you found out what everybody was paying attention to or what was a concern. And the farmer talk about soybean prices, or he’d talk about fuel prices, and the car mechanic guy had talked about what’s going on with the car that’s coming out from Ford or one that he’s having a problem with. And if you weren’t there during the entire time, it didn’t matter, ‘cause some of the people were there when so-and-so was there earlier, and he told you what that guy said, or two guys were moved. Maybe the guy was in at 6:00 and you were in at 8:00.
“And did anybody see Harvey?” “Oh, yeah, yeah.” “Well, what’d he have to say?” “Well, he says such and so and such and so, but he’ll be over at such and so later in the day.” And what happened was that sense of community and communication allowed for all those people to work together. If you didn’t know if so-and-so’s gonna be available at the shop that day to work on your tractor, somebody at the table, “Well, I know he’s got so-and-so’s rig in and he’s gonna be tied up most of the day, but I... He said he was getting kinda wide open for tomorrow or the next day.”
“Oh, okay. Well, I can give him a call and I’ll go over and see him tomorrow or I can plan my stuff.” That little teeny bits of communication in little sound bites and over the course of days, and weeks, and months allowed people to work together in community and to pay attention, and to know what they needed to know, and kinda slough off what they didn’t need to know. And it was very personal.
And that’s what you have in your program Doug. You have a location where a lot of people can come to, kind of feel like they’re family, communicate some bits and pieces that are relevant, leave some pieces for other people. If somebody didn’t hear every show every night, they can pick up, uh, usually get what they need to know over the course of a few days. And you’ve got your articles. It’s a community that has been created that didn’t exist just a few years ago. And it’s a go-to place, and a lot of those places don’t exist that did exist years ago. And I went back up to Shelby, Montana about a decade ago, and none of what I remembered was there anymore. It wasn’t quite the same.
And those areas of communication, those schedules looked to me like they had somewhat broken down. But you could go all over the country 30, 40 years ago, and it was that way all across the country, even in some of the fringes of the larger cities. It’s not the same way today, so where can we go?
And your program Doug has become one of those nexus points that we people in our type of a community mindset can go and get community information that’s, that’s relevant to us with the way that we think, the, the kind of people we are, and I think that’s really important. I think that, that makes your program, a hinge point for me and for others like us every day.

Juan shared a fun story about Shelby Montana with SpaceShot76 from a show back in 2023. Great Story that explains a “completely different world”. Back in the 70’s. Memories of times gone by when everyone in town left their keys in the car.
The February 2023 Chinese high-altitude balloon flew over Montana, including areas near Malmstrom AFB and the associated ICBM fields. U.S. officials assessed it as a surveillance platform that maneuvered over sensitive military sites (including the nuclear missile complex) to collect intelligence; it had limited additional value beyond what satellites already provide, and countermeasures were taken. China described it as a civilian weather balloon blown off course. (Right!)
The balloon continued south and eastward and was later shot down off the U.S. East Coast. Reports noted prior Chinese balloon activity over or near U.S. territory in earlier years, but the 2023 event specifically drew attention for its path near the Montana missile sites.
Timeline and path: Entered U.S. airspace over Alaska (Aleutian Islands) on January 28, 2023; crossed Canada; re-entered over northern Idaho on January 31; flew over Montana (near Malmstrom AFB and Minuteman III ICBM silos) on February 1; continued southeast across the central U.S.; shot down February 4 off the South Carolina coast. 2023.
Capabilities: High-altitude (~60,000–65,000 ft), solar-powered, equipped with propellers/rudders and altitude control for limited remote steering and loitering. Carried sensors, antennas, and equipment for electronic signals collection, geo-location, and imagery—part of a PLA surveillance program, not a weather balloon.
Sensitive sites: Passed near/over key nuclear-related locations, especially Malmstrom AFB in Montana (one of the three main U.S. ICBM bases). Approached areas linked to other strategic sites (e.g., near Offutt and Whiteman AFBs) NORAD tracked it continuously.
Control: Remotely influenced by Chinese operators (PLA-linked). U.S. assessed intentional surveillance use, even if original path may have been diverted by winds.
Military rationale: Commanders advised against shoot-down over land due to large payload debris risk to people/infrastructure. Waiting enabled safer recovery, U.S. intelligence collection on the balloon, and reduced residual Chinese collection value.
How did we react and what did the Military Say about who, what, where and why we let this Spy Balloon cross the Country? It was powered and steerable and who was in CONTROL? This goes against every grain of common sense. The pictures tell the story of the TRAVEL of this Spy Balloon and it went over the three Military Air Force Bases with Nuclear Missiles in Montana, North Dakota and Wyoming near Cheyenne Mountain where NORAD watched and recorded every move.
Juan was right.. this had to be managed so we would know what the Chinese had in mind. Remember Trump was the CIC during that year. 2023. Biden was incompetent.
In short: MX/Peacekeeper was tested at Vandenberg, deployed only at Warren, and evaluated (but not selected) for rail-garrison use that included Malmstrom as a candidate. Bynum-area and broader Malmstrom silos have long held Minuteman-series ICBMs and still host active Minuteman III missiles under 341st Missile Wing control. The 2023 Chinese balloon incident involved overflight of those same sensitive Montana sites. Also Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota, and F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming, operated by the U.S. Air Force 90th Missile Wing, maintains control over 150 Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles spread across a 9,600-square-mile area in Wyoming, Nebraska, and Colorado, representing one-third of the entire U.S. deployed ICBM strategic nuclear deterrence force
