Design Ideas: The En Suite Bathroom

First of all, apologies for no post on Thursday, I’m juggling a million balls in the air at the moment. It’s all good, but for three days this week I’ve had to become my alter ego Gladys the Chambermaid, changing beds and scrubbing loos at our holiday home. In between that I’ve had design work to do, content creation for Instagram, and it’s been really full on with the barn renovations.

Our plumber decided he was starting on the first fix for the upstairs en suite on Wednesday, but I was under the impression he was just sorting the heating pipes for the foreseeable and bathrooms would be later. It resulted in a mad panicky day down a sanitary ware rabbit hole, meaning there was absolutely no time left to write before Thursday morning. I think it all got to me, as I ended up with one of those dreadful migraines I used to get when I was much younger. Lasts for days.

Anyway, you may not have even noticed, particularly as it seems half of Substack has taken august off. Perhaps I should take a leaf out of their book?

On a good note, it inadvertently means that I am now much further ahead with my master bedroom en suite bathroom plans. Sometimes being forced to make decisions can be a good thing. It’s not that the plumber actually needed all the vitreous china, taps and click-clack wastes, he’s not fitting out the bathroom for us, we’ll be doing that. But, he is fitting all the pipes and wastes for us, and therefore needs to know exactly where it’s all going. The problem is, you can’t know the exact positions of inlets and outlets unless you’ve chosen what you want.

We had planned for an 1800 x 800mm shower tray, but it turns out the waste would have been precisely over the middle of a floor joist, one of those new ones our carpenter put in after finding out the entire bathroom was being supported by not much more than a few sheets of Quilted Velvet. We’ve now gone for a 1700mm tray, which works just fine. Anyway, the point is, you need to know all your measurements before a plumber can do his handiwork.
