‘The journalist who got the job you wanted can still help your career’: Cristina Silva wrote in her Ask the Recruiter column for Poynter that there’s a lot to be learned from hiring managers and others on the job market.
“When someone lands a job you wanted, read their LinkedIn profile and clips,” Silva shared. “Is there something about their approach that you can borrow to up your game?”
‘Using SMS and messaging for deeper engagement in journalism’: The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas is hosting an online course where students will “explore how SMS, WhatsApp, and other messaging platforms are reshaping journalism and creating new opportunities for deeper, more direct audience relationships,” according to the Knight Center.
David Cohn, a Senior Director at Advance Digital, will serve as instructor for the free course that spans from September 14–27, according to the Knight Center.
Which states are changing their pay disclosure laws? ADP published an update in May that looks at pay disclosure requirements across the country, including a few recent and upcoming law changes.
“Many of these laws require employers to post/disclose the minimum and maximum pay range/scale they reasonably/genuinely/in good faith expect to pay a successful applicant for the role,” according to ADP. “Typically, ‘good faith’ means the salary range the employer at the time of the listing genuinely believes they are willing to pay successful applicants.”
