“While he was still a long way off,” from the parable of the Prodigal Son, is one of my favorite minor phrases in the Bible. What’s yours?

Anyone have an at-home cold plunge setup they enjoy?

Has anyone integrated audio/dictation into their notes, writing, personal knowledge management workflows in a way they’re happy with? I haven’t done anything like this yet, but I’m interested!

What are the most versatile shoes you own?

You mean not a single Trojan horse-dragger was, idk, lazy enough to ask “Why is this thing so damn heavy, anyways?!”?

Finally saw The Odyssey in theaters! Way more jump-scares than I was expecting, but, wow! What a film! Has me thinking a lot about xenia/hospitality, “Zeus’s law,” and how far short we fall of even that standard, when it comes to immigrants and the poor.

As a child, what was your relationship to the terms “strong-willed” or “obedient” re: yourself and/or your siblings?

Finally getting around to reading “The Age of Reading is Over” in The Atlantic (the hard copy, one of my last since my subscription has lapsed, arrived). It’s some of the saddest stuff I’ve ever read, and I’m not even to the AI section yet!

How to Not Pass Out or Faint When Getting Your Blood Drawn

The trick that's finally stopped me from fainting during blood draws: staying tense and amped up instead of trying to relax.

Sigh, no, we don’t need PERMANENT Daylight Saving Time, we need to get RID of Daylight Saving Time! Standard Time all the time!

Crossbody/sling bag on a guy. Yea or nay?

Basement Dehumidifier Woes: Even AlorAir Isn't Good Enough?

My supposedly commercial-grade AlorAir Sentinel HD55 developed a refrigerant leak, leaving me to choose between expensive shipping, a near-retail replacement, and another disposable dehumidifier.

I’m of two minds (at least) on the Balogun mess. You? #WorldCup

A New Battle Hymn

New lyrics for the Battle Hymn of the Republic, proclaiming God's solidarity with migrants, the poor, and the oppressed.

Testing a small POSSE improvement: this Note should carry a link back to its canonical copy on joshuapsteele.com when it reaches Micro.blog and Bluesky.

(untitled)

Resurrected my Bluesky account, using my domain name as my handle. Testing my Drafts > Website > MicroBlog > Bluesky flow here!

Cabo Verde pronunciation in Portuguese. Is it “KAH-boo VEHR-duh” or “KAH-boo VEHR-jee”? I think Brazilian Portuguese would be the latter “-jee” version (at least in the NE where I visited some 20 years ago).

Unless we get our fear and greed under control, I don’t think we’ve got another 250 years in us. 🇺🇸

I think Sidny Lopes Cabral’s goal for Cape Verde vs Argentina, to tie it back up in the 103rd minute, was one of the top five most memorable goals I’ve ever seen. Right up there with van Persie’s “Flying Dutchman.” What say you?

What is the main goal/purpose of the offsides rule in soccer? Does VAR help or hinder that purpose?

(untitled)

What a terrible VAR red card. Boo. 👎👎👎

It’s far too hot and humid out. 🥵

If you could put a short phrase/question on a bracelet (or somewhere else you’d regularly see it), in order to help you make better decisions, big or small, to improve your life, what would it say?

COROS should add Rucking (walking with a weighted pack) as a supported activity mode, complete with logging how much weight you’re carrying.

Woof. Some of these FOX commercials, man. #WorldCup

Messi still has the magic!

What is something you care about more than most people realize?

(untitled)

This is the least excited I’ve ever been about a World Cup, and it’s on my own continent!

I’d completely forgotten about Julius Summer Miller’s old physics videos. Used to watch them all the time on PBS!

“Gentlemen, for the first 60 feet, that was a hell of a pitch.” Warren Spahn, joking about allowing Willie Mays his first Major League hit, a home run.

Do you believe you can change? Why or why not?

Finally finished “Against the Machine” by Paul Kingsnorth. Overall, I think he’s right. But, wow, he goes full “crazy right-wing uncle” in a few spots. Multiple COVID rants. Nothing about the tech-supported rise of right-wing fascism.

You know you’re not in your 20s anymore when finishing a sporting event without a new injury feels like a win, no matter what the score was! (We lost by one goal in overtime, but my ankles held-up OK without getting re-sprained)

TextExpander Archaeology: The Snippets of a Ph.D. Student

A record of the TextExpander snippets I built during my Ph.D. work on Barth and Bonhoeffer, and what they reveal about that season.

Logos Bible Software Needs an MCP Server

I've spent thousands on my Logos library and pay for its AI features. Claude is far better. The fix is an MCP server, and Logos's licensing objection is really a solvable authorization problem.

The USA healthcare and health insurance industrial complex is truly a hellscape of greed and structural sin.

Rededicate 250: A Poem

A prophetic poem for America's 250th anniversary, calling for justice, mercy, disarmament, and care for the vulnerable.

Parents! We’ve got 3yo, 5yo, and 7yo. I’m intrigued by “Mindset Decks” to help teach/cue things like grit, emotional intelligence, and good manners. Anyone out there used Mindset Decks? Thoughts? Any other cue/reminder tools you’ve found helpful in the day-to-day of parenting?

Installing Ubuntu 26.04 LTS on my 2016 MacBook Pro (13,1 without a Touch Bar). Looks like Obsidian, VS Code, and Warp Terminal shouldn’t be a problem. But I’ll miss Drafts very much on that machine. Any recommended Linux alternatives for Drafts?

Am I still a priest? I left the ACNA in 2023. Just received my Letters Dimissory. But I still can’t decide if ordination conferred something real and permanent, or if it was only ever a jurisdictional authorization. What say you? https://joshuapsteele.com/am-i-still-a-priest/

Am I Still A Priest? Thinking Through Ordination After Resignation

Working through the theology of Holy Orders after receiving my Letters Dimissory from the ACNA.

Me: “I’m frustrated with my body. I finally get my motivation worked-out and start running regularly again, then I get shin splints and multiple weeks of head colds in a row.” My body: “In that case, best I can do is…appendicitis.” 🤷‍♂️🦠

Question for the crowd: anyone else get vasovagal around procedures being done to them, but not at the sight of blood or watching others get stuck? Shots are fine if I look away. Getting blood drawn or an IV placed is the worst. Even thinking about a procedure (especially anything near the groin, hypothetically speaking) makes me go cold and clammy. Curious how common this specific combination is.

I’ve got appendicitis and I’m stuck at home waiting to see if antibiotics will do the trick so I don’t have to get an appendectomy. Ask me anything!
