Across the globe, in villages, cities, and refugee camps alike, people are asking deeper questions in life: What really matters? What is God like? What happens after we die? Is there hope? What people are looking for can be discovered in God’s word- the holy, powerful, and effective word. Wycliffe’s UK office announced in May 2026 that the Bible had been completed in its 800th language, now allowing 6.2 billion people access to a bible in their own language. James Poole, Wycliffe’s executive director, called it an extraordinary time for world mission and noted that translation work is accelerating in many parts of the world. Here is a short update from the worldwide Bible translation movement right now.
There are approximately 7,400 living languages in the world. There are 803 completed bible translations, 1,837 languages that have a complete New Testament, and 1,516 that have at least a portion of Scripture. New Bibles and New Testaments are being launched at a rate of almost one every three days. These numbers represent the projects that are systematically being kept track of.
Translation Progress, What Is Accelerating It, and the Barriers That Remain
The pace of the work has genuinely shifted over the past year. Right now, there are 4,429 languages with some kind of translation project in progress, whether preparation, drafting, or checking. There are 535 languages, representing about 37.5 million people, that have been assessed as vital enough to sustain and benefit from a translation project once workers and resources become available. This means there is a long line, hundreds of languages long, of projects waiting to be tackled. Each project requires a faithful group of trained team players who are willing to labor in excellence and accuracy, compelled by love, to the glory of God, for the sake of others.
Artificial intelligence has also become a genuine catalyst. At the Museum of the Bible’s Generating Wisdom conference, held in early 2026, representatives from Wycliffe, SIL International, Biblica, and Scriptura described how AI tools are speeding up drafting and quality checking, while stressing that human translators remain essential. Their shared position was summed up in the phrase augmentation, not automation, for Bible translation, the informal motto of the Partnership for Applied Biblical Natural Language Processing.
These tools come with real limits. Many minority languages simply do not have enough existing text for an AI system to learn from, which risks producing translations shaped more by outside linguistic patterns than by the target culture’s own frameworks. Translating a word like shepherd or king is not only a linguistic decision, but also a theological one, and getting the cultural framework wrong can unintentionally distort the meaning of the gospel message itself. That is why every organization working in this space maintains that human consultants and community checkers remain essential to catch what a machine cannot.
The barriers that remain are the hardest ones left, largely because the easier projects have already been completed. Sign languages remain especially underserved. Of the roughly 380 known sign languages, only about 82 currently have some Scripture translated, and only American Sign Language has a complete Bible, according to reporting published in January 2026. Many of the languages still waiting are spoken by small, isolated, or newly identified communities, which makes sustaining a translation team difficult even when the will to start exists. Digital access continues to expand as a way to close these gaps. As of January 2026, the United Bible Societies’ Digital Bible Library held more than 4,100 texts in 2,444 languages, and more than 3,200 audio Scriptures were available in 1,800 languages, helping reach communities where literacy or printed access remains limited.
