assumptions get us into trouble.

“i assumed you would understand.”

“i just assumed it would get resolved.”

“i assume that they would like it.”

i bet you’ve said things like this before. in and out of business.

every time this happens, it seems like we’re wrong. we get ourselves into trouble.. dig a hole for ourselves.

these assumptions generally are a kind of laziness… not doing the actual thinking it requires to understand their POV.

“oh well i just assumed…”

try the opposite: don’t make any assumptions whatsoever. ask questions. yeah, sometimes you might come across as annoying but at least you won’t have made the wrong assumption.

wrong assumptions waste time and they make you look bad.

we’re all guilty here. i’m just making an observation that i see. i run a tech startup and it’s my job to ask questions of my team, and to probe, and to not assume anything.

the moment i assume i’m usually wrong. because i’m dumber than my team about many things. so when i assume i waste everyone’s time.

ask more questions.
