Today we heard from the governor’s budget director in JFAC, who explained how Gov. Brad Little intends to balance the budget in the next fiscal year. The bottom line is that it’s not enough. It relies on one-time gimmicks, spends more than the state takes in on an ongoing basis, and leaves Idaho with the lowest ending fund balances in nearly a decade.
This is a structurally unbalanced budget. Temporary fixes are being used to mask permanent spending commitments. That is not sustainable, and it is not responsible.
Idaho families cannot spend more than they earn, and neither can state government. JFAC and the Legislature will restore structural balance, rein in non-discretionary spending, and protect Idaho taxpayers. Idaho needs a budget that lives within its means—and that is exactly what we intend to deliver.
