Renee Good is the ninth person to be fired upon by ICE agents since September and the second to be killed. In September, immigration officers pulled over a Mexican immigrant named Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez outside of Chicago. He was shot and killed less than a minute later. Homeland Security said that Mr. Villegas-Gonzalez hit and dragged one of the officers with his car and that the officer who shot him was acting in self-defense. Video analysis does not corroborate that story.
Guns are only one mode of ICE’s policy of violence. As of December, ICE has arrested more than 328,000 people—more than 1,000 arrests per day. Nearly three-quarters have no criminal convictions. Nearly half lack even a pending criminal charge. Only 5% have violent criminal convictions. Hundreds are American citizens. And of course, people like Renee are nowhere in these statistics.
ICE hurts children, parents, co-workers, friends every day. Renee is the latest casualty, and she won’t be the last.
