A scummy rock band sits at their instruments as an excited (and well-dressed) executive exclaims: “Do you guys realize you’ve written the next great American beer jingle?!”
This joke would’ve been better twenty years ago. Do they still even have beer jingles? Or rock bands?
Related: I’m reading William Gaddis’s J.R. right now, and it’s a great book (and not very challenging once you get into the rhythm of it), but it’s also weirdly dated; it was published in ‘75, and the crassness, commercialism, and money-hunger it satirizes seem weirdly quaint compared to what we face today. You haven’t seen relentless marketing/ advertising/ “influencing” till you’ve seen 2026.

You might need to zoom in a little to get all the detail Ali put in (and I trimmed off the edges — technical difficulties! — I apologize). The castaway with the outboard motor on the island, with his hair blowing in the breeze, has a perfect “friendly boater” manner about him; I’ve been waved to by people on boats, exactly like that, many times! And look how forlorn the other fellow is. Thank you, Ali, it’s great.
Draw my cartoons. I’ll print them here.
