When Pseudo-Profundity is Weirdly Helpful

Joseph Folley · Unsolicited Advice

About a year ago, I made a video on pseudo-profound bullshit. I am broadly still quite happy with it, even though I would probably write it a bit differently now. But a phrase has been itching at the back of my mind recently, which I think challenges my general assumption in that video that all pseudo-profound bullshit is necessarily bad. The phrase is

“You can just do things”

This is typical pseudo-profound bullshit of the deepity genus. It either means something totally trivial: that the laws of physics are not stopping you from doing many of the things you say you “cannot do”, which we already knew anyway, or it is arguing for the false idea that you can “just do things”, and few-to-no negative consequences will occur following this. This is obviously false: sometimes throwing caution to the wind and just doing things has very negative consequences, and in fact this is precisely why caution is best kept away from the wind much of the time.
