Internet discourse (and arguably discourse in general) develops through a series of overcorrections to the last big trend. Much like the skinny jeans of the 1980s are replaced by the baggy ripped jeans of the 1990s, there is nothing so reliably as, a year-or-so after X has been “all-the-rage”, X’s opposite coming along to kick it off its pedestal, bringing with it its own flaws that we are not yet experienced enough to spot. New Atheism, flawed as it was, is replaced by a kind of internet theism to rival the worst excesses of a vituperative redditor, and relationships commentary oscillates back and forth like a lonely grandfather clock.
