Three or four years ago, I blogged every weekday for nearly an entire year. Or maybe it was six months. I actually don’t remember.
Which is kind of the point of this new section of my Substack. I’m forgetting a lot of shit lately. It kind of scares me, because I have a lot of good stories from my past, and still more new good stuff happening every day. I don’t want to lose these memories. I mean, what are we, other than walking meat puppets with memories?
I read somewhere that people can only remember a handful of memories from childhood, a few from teenage years, and maybe 5-20 meaningful memories per year in adulthood. That truly sucks. I mean, take yesterday for example. It was a nice enough day. I think. I actually don’t remember! Oh, wait. I had my follow-up appointment with my GI doctor. I don’t remember most of what he said (I did write it down) but I do recall the two most important things:
I’m not dying, and
I can drink coffee again. One cup, preferably cold brew or low acid. But I can have it, thank God.
I guess yesterday is a terrible example; I’m always going to remember that doctor. He’s fantastic, especially compared to the emotionless sack of drywall plaster that is my regular primary doctor.
But my point stands: if you showed me a random day and date from last month and asked what happened then, I’d have no idea. It’s like that day just vanished from existence. And I don’t like that at all. Something did happen. Something funny or sad or emotional. Whatever it was, it became part of my history. I want to know it, learn from it, or at least laugh at it. I want to keep it.
So that’s this. It’s a daily journal. It’s kinda just for me. These won’t be sent out to my email list. I’ll write memories, thoughts, or just fuck around. Some of these will become drafts for full blown essays posted in the email newsletter section, and others will simply forever remain a part of my history.
You can subscribe to this section, completely free, but it’s fully opt-in. Again, these aren’t going to be included with my official substack. I don’t want to blow up my regular subscribers’ email boxes. If you’d like to have these daily entries mailed to you, there’s button somewhere around here that says “Subscribe to this Section”.
And if you don’t, that’s okay too. I think these are going to end up just being cool shit I get to read ten or twenty years from now. In fact, if that’s the case:
HI FUTURE JOE! HOW ARE YOU? HOW’S RETIREMENT? STILL SEXY? HOW ARE YOU ENJOYING THAT PORSCHE? DON’T LET ME DOWN, JOE. I PROMISED YOU THAT 911 WITH A SIX SPEED.
