A couple of weeks ago I posted a reel comparing café curtains to shutters, mostly to make the case for something that still feels relatively new on the design scene. Café curtains are spreading across homes like wildfire right now, but I think a lot of people still file them under “trad” - and I get it, there’s a country, slightly fussed-over version of this that’s very much my thing too. What I wanted to show is that they don’t have to stay there. Done right, a café curtain is just as happy being fresh and modern as it is being cottage-y. Soft, light, more romantic than any heavy window treatment, and genuinely versatile. Kitchens, cloakrooms, utility rooms, larders, even as an internal screen over open shelving. That effortlessly undone, quietly Parisian energy that’s hard to get any other way.
What I didn’t expect was the comment section to turn into something closer to a clinic. Hundreds of people, all with a window in mind, all asking some version of but what about mine? Bay windows. PVC frames. Six-pane sashes. French doors. A 2.5 metre kitchen window with nothing to anchor a rod to. It was clear pretty quickly that the appeal of the café curtain isn’t really in question - what people want is permission, and a plan, for their specific situation.
So this is me answering properly, in the order the doubts tend to surface…
