John Storm · Eye of the Storm

Hello - I hope you had a great September 2023 - here are a few things that caught my eye this month:

Some doodles inspired by the work of Henry Moore

September with Henry Moore

For the month of September I spent time with the work of sculptor Henry Moore. I am a fan of his organic figure drawings and sculptures. I like the honesty of this quote:

“My work is a mixture of influences and appreciation of art… and my excitement and appreciation of nature” - Henry Moore

Pocketbook - Sept. 2023

I liked how the cover of my Sept. 2023 pocketbook turned out. I had seen something recently that inspired this sparse and spaced-out collage technique.

Me flipping through the typical contents of my pocketbooks: lists, doodles, etc.
I kept a log of high temps in September in hopes I would see the weather cool off…
Back cover… I accidently got black paint on it.
Playing around with abstract comics with Nick F. Potter

Abstract Comics Class

Somehow I stumbled upon information about an online comics workshop that happens each Friday night. So I joined one on Sept. 15th with artist Nick F. Potter on how to create Abstract Comics (see my notes below.)

I enjoyed his process and definitely want to check out his book: Big Gorgeous Jazz Machine

The workshops are provided by S.A.W. (Sequential Artists Workshop) - you can find all previous Friday night workshops on their YouTube page. I think it’s interesting to try other people’s creative process and see what happens.

Wincing the Night Away by The Shins (Album, Indie Pop): Reviews, Ratings, Credits, Song list - Rate Your Music
This was the album artwork that caught my eye back in 2007

Music of the month: The Shins

Back in 2007, I was walking through the music/CD section of Target (back when they actually sold compact discs in store.) The artwork of an album caught my eye. I had never heard of the band before but their name - The Shins sounded intriguing. I purchased the album and became a fan over the years.

For the month of September, I listened my way through The Shins entire musical journey (as well as the side project Broken Bells.) Here are a few of my favorites:

  • New Slang

  • Gone for Good

  • Turn On Me

  • Simple Song

  • Australia

This drain had been beckoning me…

Pareidolia of the month

For the last few months I have noticed a drain opening as I walk into work. I decided to add some eyes to it (eyes courtesy of my 8 year old.) Last time I checked, the eyes are still there … I wonder if anyone has noticed.

Thanks for reading, keep your eyes open for anything interesting and I hope you have a great October 2023!
