Heather Cox Richardson is the focus of a Boston Globe article here. There is a good chance you, or somebody you know, reads her daily newsletter on Substack or Facebook. According to the Globe:
Her newsletter, Letters from an American, filed daily in the dead of night from her home in Midcoast Maine, has nearly 7 million followers across Facebook and Substack. It’s an ambitious undertaking: In at least a thousand words, she summarizes the day’s top political news, often adding historical context.
Given that we do not live in a democracy1 but rather in a dictatorship of the rich, one that has existed since before the Founding Fathers even wrote the U.S. Constitution, anybody (especially a well-informed academic historian of the United States, which the Globe article informs us Richardson is) who, like Richardson, says they want to “protect American democracy” is in fact saying they want to protect the dictatorship of the rich. And Richardson does indeed say this. The Globe reports:
Holding office is “not a skill set I have,” she said in the video. “What I do have is another set of skills that are unique, really. And I’m using them every day in a way that I hope is protecting American democracy.” …
She denies being partisan; she’s merely trying to preserve a democracy that she believes could quickly spiral. The stakes are too high, she says.
“I am fiercely advocating for American democracy. Other than that, I’m not advocating for anything — maybe chocolate,” she says. “But what that means is that I will be fiercely advocating to get MAGA Republicans out of office, because I think they are attacking American democracy.” …
Richardson’s goal of preserving democracy means she has aligned herself largely with Democrats. And thanks to her massive reach, she has become an important platform for Democratic hopefuls.
Heather Cox Richardson is a person who wants the dictatorship of the rich to be managed by the Democratic Party instead of by the Trump wing of the Republican Party. The rich have ruled the United States and oppressed the have-nots with Democratic Party politicians just fine (from their point of view) for as long as that party has existed. The Democratic Party does not object to the routine ways that the rich treat the have-nots like dirt, because it is beholden to the rich and not at all desirous of removing the rich from power, despite that removing the rich from power is what the vast majority of Americans want. The Democratic Party has been as accommodating as the Republican Party to the CIA’s sordid history of assassinations and overthrowing of foreign elected governments, and has been no less enthusiastic than the Republican Party about waging unjust wars (read some of the gory details here.)
During working hours on the job American workers live in an absolute dictatorship of the employer without even the pretense of democracy, i.e., there’s no voting on what the corporate policy should be. In a genuine democracy the workers in an economic enterprise would be in charge of the enterprise democratically as equals and would democratically decide what, today, is only decided by the owners of the business or by their appointed managers. As far as the U.S. government is concerned, everybody knows that the important decisions are made by the very rich, via their lobbies, and not by the have-nots.
