I’ll admit it, the title shocked me, then intrigued me, then made me a little upset, and then I noticed all those feelings and thought, yeah, let’s get Liz Roberts on the show.
Liz, an anthropology professor at University of Michigan, has spent a lot of time living in Mexico and noting the difference between how addiction, dependency, vice, devotion, community, and family are handled there as opposed to America. She thinks, at root, that American culture shuns the person addicted to some substances and excuses addiction to others. But ultimately, that people most in need of community tend to be the ones denied it most often in the U.S.
The book and the interview are filled with stories of Liz’s own life, her dependencies, her relationship with food and booze and shopping, and her life with her sister who is in recovery from alcohol addiction and bipolar disorder.

Leth had his assistant buy some burgers and directly advised him to buy some in halfway neutral packaging as Leth was afraid that Warhol might reject some brands (Warhol always had an obsession with some of his favorite brands).
So Andy Warhol finally did arrive at the studio, of course along with his bodyguards, and when he saw the selection of burgers the assistant had brought he asked “Where is the McDonald’s?” and Leth — slightly in panic — was immediately like “I thought you would maybe not like to identify…” and Warhol answered “no that is the most beautiful”. Leth offered to let his assistant quickly run to McDonald’s but Warhol refused like “No, never mind, I will take the Burger King.”
This was one of my favorite episodes ever.
When you’re a Norwegian musician, you get used to hearing a lot of the band A-ha, the biggest ever to come out of the Nordic country shaped like an arm from the elbow down. And that’s fine with Sondre Lerche, the most popular Norwegian solo musicians of all time. Sondre adored A-ha by rarely gets to share all his knowledge. Until this bedtime, that is. Sondre also reads the names of 15 fjords in their authentic pronunciations and also teaches our Norwegian-American host how to accurately pronounce his own middle name and the names of his parents, in both Bergen and Oslo dialects.
