The midweight and lightweight hiking socks by Darn Tough are beyond a doubt, the best hiking socks on the planet. They are ultra-durable socks made with merino wool and backed by an unconditional guarantee. I tested the socks for about a month and determined that they will be on my feet during all future hikes.
My first impression while unboxing the socks was a good one. The designs and colors jumped out of the packaging and the color combinations were stylish, but not over-the-top. I also liked the fact that all of Darn Tough’s packaging can be recycled.
If you haven’t seen my unboxing video on YouTube, you really ought to check it out!
Darn Tough has what seems to be an endless amount of sock designs ranging from solid colors to nature and patterns of woven animals. I’m really enjoying the Wyoming inspired buffalo design.
For men, Darn Tough offers around 189 different styles, while women get about 195 options. Across the lineup, you’ll also find 10 sock heights and multiple levels of cushioning to match different activities and preferences. Sizes range from XS to XXL.
Darn Tough socks are made from merino wool - one of the most impressive natural performance fabrics out there. Merino comes primarily from Merino sheep raised in the highlands of New Zealand and Australia, and it’s prized for being both tough and breathable. The fibers are incredibly fine — about half the thickness of a human hair — yet surprisingly strong, able to bend and twist thousands of times without breaking.
What makes Merino special is the natural crimp in each fiber. Those tiny waves act like built-in springs, allowing the fabric to stretch, move, and then return to its original shape. The result is a material that feels soft against the skin, regulates temperature in a wide range of conditions, and holds up far better than most synthetic alternatives.
Durability is where Darn Tough stands out. These socks are built tough, they hold up through countless miles and washes, and they come with an unconditional guarantee. I’ve owned many versions of Darn Tough socks over the years and have only worn through one, lightweight pair which were returned and easily replaced under warranty.
The midweight socks (both micro crew and boot height) are incredibly comfortable — they don’t bunch, shift, or create pressure points, and I found that I could wear them hiking all day without noticing them.
The lightweight version is also really comfortable, but they feel a bit thinner and not quite as plush as the midweights. That makes them great for hot-weather hikes but slightly less cozy overall.
The Darn Tough midweight and lightweight socks that I tested were great for hiking and backpacking activities. However, the lightweight socks could also be great for traditional running, trail running, and mountain biking too.
I have been using Darn Tough ski & snowboard socks for many years and absolutely love them for those activities. I know we are talking mainly about hiking here, but from a usability standpoint, Darn Tough socks have many applications.
Overwhelmed by all of their options? Use their sock finder in order to narrow down your search and help you find the perfect pair.
The midweight socks offer excellent all-season versatility, keeping feet warm on chilly mornings while wicking sweat effectively in warmer weather.
The lightweights excel in hot conditions — they dry quickly and breathe better, making them a go-to for mid-summer hikes.
Another advantage of Merino wool is that it tends to reduce odor which is helpful on long trail days.
Pros: Durable, Comfortable, Breathable and many options to choose from.
Cons: Limited single color options in the hiking category. The majority of their color offerings have two or three color combinations. It would be great to see more single color options without a logo. A mountain bike specific version would be great as well!
The midweight micro crew socks are the best all-around choice — versatile for most conditions, super durable, and just plain comfortable.
The lightweights deliver when it’s hot out, keeping feet cool and dry.
Either way, with the durability and unconditional guarantee, Darn Tough hiking socks are one of the few gear items I feel completely confident recommending to anyone who hikes. You can’t go wrong with these socks!
At $25-$28 this product is definitely worth the price.
Wishing you an epic day and a weekend full of adventure!
