Another thing I wanted for the jungle this year is a bird. Specifically a toucan. So I modeled one: And then assembled it: Ha ha…yes…yes… It's interesting to compare these side by side. Some of the sharp angles of the model are smoothed, like where the beak connects to the head. If I were more careful I could probably replicate these more faithfully, but if I feel like the model is lacking those…
This is the latest I’ve ever been on a week in review. It is fully next week. But here’s what happened. First, my game jam scores : Creativity: 3.875 Narrative: 2.625 Enjoyment: 2.625 Artwork: 2.375 Audio: 1.000 (my game had no audio) Not bad! I hoped for a little higher, and I only got 8 ratings lol, but I am proud. I’ve learned a lot about Blender modeling since finishing the jam, now that I…
I finished my game for the GMTK 2026 game jam! Play Five to Nine . My not-engine, Dollhouse, ended up working great. I made some improvements to collision detection and animation management and camera movement and dialog UI, and—this is the most interesting part to me—none of it was specific to this game. I could plop new Ink and GLTF files in front of this same script and it would be something…
Feels like such a short amount of time since my last week in review. (That's because I wrote the last one on Sunday.) The one thing I missed out on when visiting Disneyland last week was having a drink at Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar, nestled within the grounds of the Disneyland Hotel. Instead, on Saturday I went to the newest incarnation of Lucky Tiki in Highland Park with Amy. It was great!…
Hello, I'm still working on this game thing! It's definitely not an engine ; I'm fairly convinced that a game engine is not something I want for myself or to provide for other people, especially after reading this article (ᔥ Casey ). The goal, I think, for my future non-trivial projects and theoretically for anyone else with whom this resonates, is to copy the code I've written and start a new…
Hey I've been blogging weekly for six months! Almost all of my excess anxious energy the last few days has been funneled into this game engine. Let's review: This is a browser-based game engine for 3D walking around type games. Not platformers. There's no jumping. 3D asset development and level design happens in Blender. The world is exported as a single GLB file. Eventually I want to write a…
Almost missed a week of blogging. I have been feeling an elevated amount of ambient stress and I think it all stems from AI in various ways. Can’t wait for this fucking bubble to pop! Come on, bubble! Came up with a clown routine and a framework for creating a clown routine on a walk home from the Elysian a few days ago. I took some notes on this that I'll turn into a blog post soon; it's part of…
Greeting from Palm Springs, we're here for a couple days. For some reason the thing I most look forward to when visiting Palm Springs is sitting in front of this loud-ass fountain sculpture with a muffin and a cold brew. (This is at Koffi across the street from the Ace Hotel. If you're staying at the Ace and don't want to get in the car, I highly recommend it!) I have a few interesting technology…
Amy Jacobowitz , my beloved partner and an avid reader of this blog, turns ## today! She just finished the first semester of her MFA in TV Writing at UCLA and I'm so proud of her and she's very cool. Here's a photo of her dog, Travis: He's not ferocious. Just sleepy. I cleaned the garage this weekend, organizing the absolute explosion I created between the rush at the end of Halloween and the rush…
It just occurred to me that in the 1994 film The Lion King , when Zazu sings “This child is getting wildly out of wing,” that’s a joke about the expression “out of hand” because he is a bird. I think my kid brain just assumed “out of wing” was something grownups said sometimes and I didn’t question it for 32 years.
