I was concerned but not particularly surprised to hear this latest monologue from Hasan Piker that went viral.

He tells American Jews:
“If Jews in America keep putting this idea out there that they are singularly invested in Israel, eventually someone’s going to come around and take action, not against the State of Israel, mind you, but against American Jews. I don’t know how people don’t recognise how dangerous this predicament is, how dangerous this is for Jews. You’re running around basically tying your entire identity to a country that inevitably will be seen as Jewish ISIS, and you’re saying, as Jews, this is all we care about. You’re making antisemitism worse.”
Can you imagine if someone went to American Muslims or American-Palestinians, and told them that by supporting Palestine they are making Islamophobia or anti-Arab racism worse?
Or if someone said that Palestinian nationalism will be inevitably seen as like ISIS?
Yes—you know what would happen. There would be a firestorm of counter-accusations. The person in question would immediately be accused of anti-Arab racism and Islamophobia.
And rightly so. It’s unfair to blame people for racism directed towards them. The person to blame for racism is the person being racist. They are the one who makes the decision to believe in and to repeat racist tropes. It’s not the fault of the people who are being targeted!
Antisemites are to blame for antisemitism. Not American Jews.
So let’s be very clear: Piker might call rising antisemitism a “dangerous predicament”. But frankly, his speech is rationalising antisemitism. He’s justifying it on the basis that Israel (to him) is “Jewish ISIS”, and therefore that American Jews who support or identify with Israel are somehow bringing antisemitism on themselves.
Basically, he’s engaging in victim blaming. Jews are being racially abused, and Piker believes that their support for Israel is somehow making that worse.
But the truth is that “Israel” can mean a million different things to a million different people.
Does support for Israel necessitate support for Netanyahu? Ben-Gvir? Meir Kahane?
No, obviously not. There are a thousand different shades of Zionism, and a thousand different ways to support Israel, including many which are hyper-critical of the current government’s policies. Anyone who has spent any time around American Jews can tell you that. American Jews possess a mixture of different beliefs. Not all of them necessarily identify as Zionist, but among the ones who do, there will very often be tremendous levels of disagreement with figures like Netanyahu.
Similarly: support for Palestinians does not somehow mean that you support Hamas, or want to kidnap or massacre Jews. Waving the Palestinian flag by no means necessitates support for Hamas or jihadists in any way, in fact.
Anyone who tells you that support for Zionism automatically means support for Ben-Gvir, Smotrich, Netanyahu, or civilian suffering in Gaza, etc, is lying to you.
Similarly, anyone who tells you that support for Palestinian nationalism automatically means support for Yahya Sinwar, Ismail Haniyeh and October 7, etc, is also lying to you.
And similarly, just because you support Iraqis or Syrians doesn’t mean you support ISIS.
Trying to conflate a whole country or national identity with some political figures, or some ideological stance, or even some war crimes is just extremely intellectually dishonest.
Does Piker think that anyone who waves a Rwandan flag is supporting the genocide of Tutsis? Does he think anyone who waves a Serbian flag is supporting the Srebenica massacre? Does he believe anyone who waves a Palestinian flag is supporting October 7?
Obviously not.
And that’s perfectly reasonable. It’s ridiculous to blame Palestinians generally for the actions of Hamas on October 7.
But there’s a different standard for American Jews, you see.
When American Jews—even ones who are critical of the current government—affirm some kind of support for the basic idea of Israel or of the idea that Jews (like every other nationality) have a right to self-determination, then (according to Piker) they are somehow bringing antisemitism down on their own heads.
So, why the double standard, Hasan?
Why do you hold Jews to a different standard than for other groups?
And what are you really threatening them with? What does it mean when you say someone is going to “take action” against them?
We can all guess what you mean.
