Maintaining a sustainable lifestyle is no walk in the park, especially with young children in the house. Serenity and calm are often in short supply.
It's no surprise that many new parents temporarily sideline their sustainability principles. Juggling countless responsibilities, it's easy to find ourselves in 'survival mode,' with good habits often taking a backseat. Temptations to take the unsustainable route can be irresistible. I've had my moments, too. Instead of self-blame, I've learned to ask, 'Why?' What broader changes can I make to restore a balanced mindset?
Sustainability, in its essence, involves the ability to maintain a practice over the long haul. To live sustainably, we must find practices that we can commit to over time.
How does sharing family dinners contribute to sustainability? Why trust your child's eating instincts? It's one less worry when you don't have to constantly question if your child is eating enough.
Carrying less stuff and forgoing the diaper bag? It's a sustainability choice that simplifies life and frees up mental capacity.
Here are my top five favorite hacks that make life with a little one smoother, more enjoyable, and give us extra mental space.
01 Healthy, hassle-free meals
From day one, we've embraced wholefoods and skipped 'baby-specific' meals. My passion for cooking has turned preparing balanced, nourishing dishes into cherished 'Me-Time' moments. By avoiding kid-focused snacks, we've kept snacktime battles to a minimum. While treats and sweets are welcome, they're not on the menu in our household.
02 Together we feast
We've made dining a family tradition. We sit at the table together, serving family-style dishes. Following the baby-led weaning approach—no purees, no bland foods—I decide what's on the menu, and Skye decides her portions. No pressure and absolutely no 'dessert only if you finish your plate.' It's all about trusting our child's instincts for healthy eating.
03 Stylish, sustainable savings
I invest in second-hand clothes for Skye. Platforms like Vinted and local second-hand stores make it easy and help us save time. Choosing pieces that work for multiple seasons and sizes is my go-to strategy. Oversized is a trend, so why not embrace it? We're now in the third year with a jacket that went from cool and oversized to fitting perfectly.
04 Light, nimble, prepared
We don't carry a diaper bag, just essentials like 3 diapers, wipes, a bottle of water, and a few snacks that fit in my purse or the stroller. Traveling with simplicity and efficiency is so much more enjoyable. Plus, why carry when you can stash everything in a stroller?
05 Train adventures
You know me, I'm a train enthusiast, and so is my daughter. Looking back, it's been a blessing in disguise. While hopping in the car might seem easier, traveling by train has countless advantages. Think breastfeeding, snacking, playing, and the priceless learning experience that you're not alone in the world, adapting to your surroundings from time to time.
