The bombing is not breaking Iran. It is building it.

Every civilian death, every school, every hospital without power, every family whose home sits near a building an algorithm flagged — each of these is not collateral damage in the strategic sense. Each is a radicalisation event in a population that already has a 73-year documented history of foreign military intervention to reference.

The foundational analytical error in the planning of Operation Epic Fury is treating the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a military organisation. It is not.

The IRGC controls an estimated 20–40% of the Iranian economy through its Khatam al-Anbiya conglomerate and hundreds of subsidiaries across energy, telecoms, construction and manufacturing. The Basij — its paramilitary militia — has approximately 90,000 active members and up to 1 million reservists embedded in every neighbourhood, workplace and university in Iran. Approximately one third of Iran’s parliament has IRGC connections.

The IRGC was built after 1979 with one foundational logic: never again be dependent on a conventional military that could be turned, bought or bombed into submission. It was designed to survive decapitation.

You cannot bomb the IRGC into irrelevance by striking its visible military assets. Its power does not reside in its missiles. It resides in its economic holdings, its social infrastructure and its distributed institutional presence. Destroying the missiles degrades one capability. The parallel state underneath is intact, radicalised and now recruiting from the families of every civilian the algorithm misidentified.

The Iran that Washington is bombing is not the Iran of the Shah’s Westernised elite. That Iran left — to Los Angeles, London, Toronto and Stockholm. What remained and what 47 years of revolution built is a genuinely distinct political culture that has no analogue in the American political imagination and that bombing does not break.

The concept of moqavemat — resistance as identity — is not propaganda. It is a lived political consciousness formed by the experience of the 1953 CIA coup, the Shah’s SAVAK, the Iran-Iraq war in which the West backed Saddam, and now this. The Iranian who genuinely opposes the Islamic Republic and the Iranian who opposes the foreign military operation bombing their city are often the same person. The diaspora’s binary framework — regime versus people — has no category for this.

The school that killed 170 girls during Ramadan is the first incident that broke through the media threshold. It is not the first incident. It is the one that got named.

The algorithm was trained on target environments in Gaza and Iraq. It was deployed in Iran without environmental validation. The IRGC target set is embedded in civilian infrastructure by design — that is the foundational architecture of the parallel state. An algorithm that cannot distinguish them, deployed without adequate human oversight, in a command culture that has removed the people whose function was to catch the errors — this is not a malfunction. This is the predictable output of the system as designed.

The intelligence about Iranian population readiness is being filtered through a community whose political consciousness has been frozen since 1979. The Iranians who left were largely the educated, Westernised upper and middle class. The 70 million Iranians born after 1979 — who have no memory of the Shah, who have built their identities entirely within the Islamic Republic — are not represented in that intelligence stream. They were never going to welcome this.

This operation has no exit. The IRGC parallel state is intact and radicalising. The diaspora restoration fantasy has no base in contemporary Iran. The AI targeting system is producing civilian casualties faster than it is degrading military capability. And the civilisational alienation being generated — the permanent damage to Iran’s pro-Western young population — will outlast every operational gain.

The brief’s central argument has been confirmed. Khamenei was killed on 28 February 2026. By March 8 the Assembly of Experts had appointed Mojtaba Khamenei — his son, an IRGC-backed hard-liner — as the new Supreme Leader. The IRGC backed him. The transition took ten days. Trump said the strikes “knocked out most of the candidates — second and third place is dead.” The IRGC found a candidate anyway. Bombing the surface of the Iranian state did not change the power structure underneath it. The parallel state absorbed the decapitation strike and continued.
