As the community grows around The Artist Economy and its subscribers, I often get emails asking for advice on what to do as a brand new artist. It’s important to understand how to set up the foundation before you start to think about launching a new project.
Most artists start with a song and an upload button. They release into a vacuum and decide the music didn’t land. The music probably landed just fine. There was just nowhere for it to go and no way to hold onto the strangers it reached. Here are the ten things to set up first, in order, before a single song goes out — the boring infrastructure that decides whether year one compounds or evaporates.
You can use this guide as a new artist, or if you’re in between projects. Either way, you should be using this checklist as a guide for having the proper infrastructure to keep you on your feet.
NOTE: for founding members only — I’m open to auditing every component of this, and ensuring that you are set up for success before you get the ball rolling. Just respond to this email.
