Try as we might, we can’t stop fall from arriving on the coattails of summer. It can be tough to pack away my Birkenstocks and secure the top on my Jeep as the temperatures dip. But as a Vermonter, I would never want to hold back the incoming waves of oranges and reds on the mountains surrounding my home.

So we’re probably in agreement that we shouldn’t prevent a fall—the season of fall, that is. But we do want to prevent physical falls … the ones that land an older adult in the ER with a related injury every 11 seconds.

We’re standing in the space between summer and fall now, so let’s prepare ourselves for the season ahead by remembering how to move through our days with care. September is Fall Prevention Awareness Month, and you might find that the same things that keep you safe on your feet today also make sense for how you experience the world in a larger sense.
