The Next Write Thing

Angela Lee Duckworth, professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania and faculty co-director of the Penn-Wharton Behavior Change for Good Initiative, addresses this potent equation in her book, Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance.

Grit is what led me here to start a Substack and connect with others to help me determine the next “write” thing.

I can tend to spread myself too thin. If you look at my full bio, you’ll see what I mean:

Mom, wife, healthcare strategist, screenwriter, previously trained in finance, theology and acting and now pursuing screenwriting with Story Summit, short fiction writing with UCLA, and directing with USC online. A recent grad of UCLA School for Theatre, Film & Television Professional Programs Division's Graduate Certificate in Writing for TV. Also, an alumnus of Dallas Theological Seminary with a Graduate Certificate in Christian Studies, and a volunteer with City Relief urban outreach ministry in NYC. And last but not least, on periodic Sundays, a member of the tech or teaching team at church.

I confess that I have the passion part of the grit equation nailed down. I can be super passionate about many things, often at the same time. But I suspect the key to confident pursuit of any endeavor is knowing where to channel the passion to ensure perseverance can do its job and propel towards the intended goal, living with intention as they say.

Enter: this column, where I’ll eagerly include you in my process of considering THE NEXT WRITE THING where I’m focusing passion in order to concentrate perseverance and continue to cultivate the grit!

In the coming weeks and months, I’ll share some of my musings, whether it’s a story idea, flash fiction, or a short script, and look forward to your input, which may range from a simple “heart” to a comment with constructive feedback, and of course I’ll cherish any of your thoughtful input!
