Hoboken’s Southwest neighborhood gets its annual reminder that culture and community go hand in hand when the fourth Summer Blockfest Hip Hop Festival takes over the mall at 770 Jackson St. on Saturday, Aug. 22, noon to 7 p.m. Presented by the community-organizer non-profits What Hoboken Sounds Like and What Jersey City Sounds Like, the free event brings together 25 rappers, DJs and singers, plus vendors, food, art, activities and the sort of neighborhood energy Hoboken has long prided itself on.
“Summer Blockfest was built to create opportunity, celebrate culture, and bring people together,” said Victor M. Lopez Jr., founder of Summer Blockfest. “What started as a neighborhood idea has grown into a platform that uplifts local talent, supports small businesses, and showcases the creativity that exists throughout our communities.”
“Beyond entertainment, Summer Blockfest remains dedicated to fostering community pride, supporting local businesses, and creating meaningful platforms for independent artists and youth engagement,” Lopez added. “The festival continues to use Hip-Hop culture as a vehicle for unity, education, and opportunity across Hudson County.
In addition to a full day of music, local vendors representing food trucks and local culinary spots as well as streetwear, art, vinyl, and local entrepreneurs will spread out over the Southwest mall Also, Summer Blockfest has partnered with the Hoboken Board of Education for a Back-to-School Book Bag Giveaway, distributing free book bags and school supplies.
In 2024 and 2025, Mayor Bhalla honored Victor Lopez Jr. and his wife with official proclamations for his leadership “in building a platform that empowers artists and uplifts underserved communities through music, storytelling, and service.”
“From The Block, For The Culture:” The festival has more than lived up to that motto. This year, with free backpacks and school supplies for youngsters and the 2nd Annual Pamela Bates Foundation Awards ceremony (honoring individuals who have made a lasting community impact,) the meaning of Summer Blockfest resonates more than ever.
