BEND, Ore. - Are you surprised that Dan Wilson is still the Mariners’ manager?

You shouldn’t be.

Why?

Because they’re the Mariners, a team that constantly does befuddling things that make no sense to everyone but them.

Most other MLB teams would have fired Wilson after a 20-31 stretch like the M’s have had the last two months given the high expectations for the 2026 season.

And most recently capping it off with six games at home in which they scored only eight runs is the latest example of a feeble offense we’ve seen all too often this year.

No one knows if a change from Wilson to presumably Manny Acta as the interim manager would spark the Mariners.

Heck, they might get worse. Or stay the same. But why not give it a shot? The Red Sox did when they fired manager Alex Cora in April, and they’ve been the best team in baseball ever since.

If the Mariners rolled the dice and fired Wilson and it didn’t work out, I don’t think we’d fault them for that, would we? At least they decided to have a wild hair and make a major move instead of doing dumb-ass stuff like firing their third-string hitting coach Bobby Magellanas last month.

Since Scapegoat Bobby was dismissed, the Mariners have gone 5-11 and are still hitting .229, just like they were before he got fired.

At the time, team president Jerry Dipoto said he wanted to “stir it up,” referring to the offense as the reason why he pink-slipped Scapegoat Bobby.

But we all know that was bogus. If Jerry really wanted to stir things up, he’d fire Wilson, hitting coach Kevin Seitzer and his lead assistant Edgar Martinez.
