However, Krasner and other public officials treat this fundamental equality as a point of controversy. The fact that there is a controversy surrounding this issue reveals the priority.
As a general matter, leniency towards those who enter the United States without permission takes precedence over the pursuit of maximum sentences against U.S. citizens for similar offenses.
It is not about being compassionate toward these individuals.
