Jill Gott-Gleason · JillGG's Substack

Imagine the smells of pizza and pretzels wafting in from the food court. It’s a hot late August day and you are at the mall to escape the heat and grab a Starbucks to peruse what’s new…

Except, we are going to go shopping together online!

The Mall Edit is a series I used to do on Instagram Reels, but as I increasingly have less and less energy for reels (or Instagram some days) - I thought it would be fun to bring it over here to Substack instead. Grab an iced coffee and get in ladies! We are going to the mall!

  • J.Crew has launched a small “in between” batch of new arrivals that seems to be mostly good basics and hints at “back to the office/school” vibes. A gorgeous blazer, a perfectly slouchy cotton sweater and tons of new button front tops (I snagged this one) is the kind of back-to-basics lead-up to fall that makes sense. It’s a weird time to shop (the heat and humidity!) but J.Crew is pretty good about sticking to monthly launches, so these pieces make sense. Not going to lie though, I am waiting with baited breath for their true fall releases, no one does fall as well as J.Crew!

  • Next stop, Madewell. Again, it’s a weird time of year for shopping in August because technically brands are focusing on fall but shoppers aren’t there yet mentally. Madewell seems to have really leaned into denim for the moment and this makes a ton of sense. People buy denim year round, but they particularly buy it for fall. And it’s a piece that unlike a heavy coat, you can sneak in a few wears here and there before cold temps. My daughter chose these jeans for back to school and while low rise isn’t my jam personally, the youth are loving it. My pick for jeans is this straight leg pair. I have them in both petite and regular for either a slightly cropped or full length straight leg jean that is ultra classic. Madewell is always one of those stores that both my daughter and I can shop at, they do a good job of walking the line of trendy but classic. I have my eye on this pointelle knit cardigan, the details are so pretty. And striped long sleeve tees seem to be everywhere right now. This one is so fun! Their entire handbag collection is always so good - no one does handbags so well at this price point in my opinion. This canvas tote is a fun back to school “preppy” pick and I’m loving this little crossbody bag!

  • Technically Boden only has one in person store in the US, but since we are shopping online… our options are limitless. This brand is one I’ve known about for a while, but it hasn’t really caught my eye until recently. When I asked for swimsuit recommendations last fall lots of you recommended Boden. I got 2 swimsuits and love them. For fall I’m loving this under $100 cotton sweater (hard to decide which color I want!) and they graciously just gifted me this barn jacket (the navy collar really got me!) and this cute little bandana scarf. I can’t wait to wear both this fall!

  • Shopbop is my go-to destination for denim. They have such a wide selection by so many great brands (and crazy fast shipping! hot tip: link your account to your amazon prime account!). I just got these Agolde classics and love the high waist and rigid denim - they feel like they are straight from the 90s in the best way possible. I also snagged this barrel pair for fall (they run big, I went down a full size) and my daughter thought they looked “cool” so that’s something. I feel like everyone is talking about this pair of Mother jeans. If I saw them in the store I would def be taking them to the fitting room! I also love perusing Shopbop’s collection of pre-owned luxury handbags. If you want something unique and different from what everyone else is carrying - their selection is so good! Shopbop also does a good job of carrying really great sneakers at all price points. They seem to have a more unique selection that other multi-brand retailers. I just got these Adidas for fall.

  • And lastly, if we were shopping together I would mandate a quick swing through Harper Wild. I just got this bra from them (gifted) and it’s SO GOOD. Wow. It takes a lot to impress me with a bra. This one is so comfortable and completely disappears under clothing. Plus, it’s under $50 (wow, have prices of bras skyrocketed. I feel like $50 is the perfect price point).

What stores should we hit up next time?
