Bungalow colonies, Jewish comedians sharpening their timing, endless buffets, and the mythic summers that inspired Dirty Dancing. For many, those mountains in Sullivan County were a playground. For my father, Bill Flanagan, they were a workplace.
“I first came to this area in 1966,” he tells me, remembering the summer he transferred from Onondaga Community College near Syracuse where he grew up, to Sullivan County Community College. “The hotels were where everybody like me worked.”
