Hello hi!
It’s the last Friday of summer for our family! We have some fun end-of-summer plans this weekend, starting tonight with a pedi cab ride to a little preview of Current Burger, a brand-new Charleston restaurant opening next week. The boys are VERY excited about burgers and milkshakes! Tomorrow we’ll spend the day on the water with friends and families, and Sunday will be a little slower as we get our ducks in a row for the big first week of school.
Something switched in me this week and suddenly I am feeling more excited for back-to-school! I think I’m ready for a bit more routine and all that this new year holds for each of my boys - I have such a good feeling about the year ahead for all three of them. Peter will be the cutest little new preschooler, Henry is ready for another year at his darling school, and I can’t wait to watch Rowan’s world open up as he heads off to kindergarten and starts learning to read. There is so much to look forward to! (And, luckily, we still have plenty of beach days ahead - one of the many gifts of summer weather lasting til September here in Charleston.)

Edwin and I have been considering if we want to enjoy one last hurrah for summer or if we want to do something for fall break with the kids in early October. Both are so temping as there may be no better time of year weather-wise to travel than August - October. Our top idea is currently a trip back to The Pridwin on Shelter Island. A year later, and we are still talking about what a dream escape those few days were. The hotel is still a bit of a hidden gem, making it magical at every turn.
Edwin and I flew the coop last August for two nights at the hotel, just the two of us, and it was such a welcome reprieve from a full summer with really young kids. It was a really wonderful place to visit for a couples trip. But, the whole time, we kept declaring, “we want to bring the kids back here!” because it has major summer camp vibes for adults and kids. When I shared our trip last year, I mused that The Pridwin has that intangible “this must be the place” feeling that you can’t manufacture (especially in this day and age when everything is manufactured). It feels like a holdover from another time, which, in fact, it is at almost 100-years-old…!!!
We played tennis, enjoyed the pool + the pool bar, took the hotel Moke into town (we loved Marie Eiffel Market for lunch), went for bike rides, hit the beach and also swam off the dock, played lawn games (the lawn is so gorgeous especially during sunset!), ate outside at the really yummy restaurant, played lots of cards at the Crescent Bar during sunset (this side of Shelter Island is famous for their legendary sunsets!), and did an evening boat with a picnic basket full of lobster rolls, potato chips, and wine. We did so much in two days (I wish we’d had time for the spa)! We also walked to Sunset Beach one night for dinner. You won’t run out of things to do but can also fully decompress and just read if you want. My kids would LOVE it.
