The style hack that's made my life much easier

When you’re a working mum you’ll basically take anything that makes your life a bit easier. Am I right?

One thing I do not have much time for these days is spending any more than say four minutes in the morning deciding what to wear. And you guys know how much I love my fashion! But honestly, even I need to make this task as simple as possible - because after getting the kids off to school, feeding the dog, putting the dishes away and then packing my own bag, the headspace I have for getting ready is very, very small.

One thing I therefore swear by these days is having a sort of uniform that works for me. Not a real uniform, obviously, but more a go-to list of items.

What’s good about this approach is that I know a) I like to wear these clothes, b) they suit me, c) they never ever put me in a bad mood or ruin my day, and d) I can pop them on and go about my day.

I realise in the past I’ve talked a lot to you guys about my love and passion of a capsule wardrobe - and I guess it is a lot like that concept. But it’s probably even more simplified than that these days to be honest.

I see so many stylish women on Instagram who share such an amazing array outfits every week, (with loads of colours, trends and newness), however I’ve come to the conclusion that this amount of choice does not work for me and my life. Sometimes their content pulls me in, and I will succumb and think I too need all that stuff but then I remember that I don’t. I’m just a much happier version of myself when my choices are limited and tailored to me.

So what I do now is I follow maybe only a handful of influencers and I only look at them and their new content - and then I get off the app. I’ve picked them on the basis of who, if tomorrow, they came round to my house and donated me their clothes I could wear them all. I also keep my pinterest board close at hand of the kind of outfits I like to wear as a reminder not to get distracted by other people’s style.

As you can see it’s a good coat or cardigan, jeans, a shirt or two, nice jumpers, trainers, loafers, some good t-shirts. In navy, black, white or tan.

Like a lot of people I’ve been watching (and daydreaming about when not watching) Love Story on Disney + and am now unhealthily obsessed with Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. And even though her clothes are gorgeous and she is goals, what I did come to realise after going down a google image rabbit hole of her outfits, was that her secret was that she kept it all very simple. This therefore meant she was utterly chic. But this was also a very smart move too, because she created herself a signature look that she just nails over and over.

I don’t know, maybe I’m just the type of person who gets very overwhelmed easily, likes minimalism in everything I do, or who like things to be very efficient. Whatever; I just think this is a great hack and re-set if you too are a bit swamped with how busy your life is but you still want to look quite nice most days.
