In Praise of the Slow, the Tangible, the Muddy

Jess Klein · Jess Klein's Travelin' Woman

Lately I’ve been noticing that I need to consciously slow the f down to remember who I am and why I create.

After the rush of releasing a new album and touring a whole bunch, and before I slip out on tour again, I’ve been craving time in the mud of my garden, walks with no purpose and no soundtrack, time to sit on the grass, pet my cat.

On Friday, after feeling antsy and disconnected from myself for a couple weeks, I finally sat down and started working on a new song again. It was a mess, and I wasn’t really sure what I was trying to say, but there’s a physicality in strumming and humming and singing words that aren’t formed yet, in letting your voice express raw emotion. It was a sweaty day, the windows were open. I was releasing something, remembering something. I texted Feathers and told him maybe this winter we’d record a few more songs this to go with the unreleased tracks from Dreaming Aloud and make it a whole new album. It’s all TBD, but I just wanted to share that it is so easy these days to get caught in “information”, screens, data. But our heartbeats are in our chests. Bodies need movement. People need touch, organic matter in and around us. Real sounds, real feelings.

Astrologically speaking, Chiron recently moved into Taurus. Chiron is “the wounded healer”. Taurus is an earth sign - the earth itself, and also the resources we pull from the earth. We’re being asked to examine what we need to feel secure and what is excess. Where are we wounded in our relationship with the earth and her resources? Where are we wounded in how we resource ourselves, our bodies? The earth always knows.

We shot this in January in Austin in the living room of the fabulous musician Dave Madden.

Speaking of tangible joys, I am SO proud to announce the vinyl of Dreaming Aloud is now here!!

I’m so proud of this album and grateful to all who have supported it. (Kickstarter folks, your vinyl will be heading your way shortly!)

It’s also available now on my Bandcamp!
