I always say the leap from working in corporate to being self employed changed the trajectory of my entire life for the better–and yes, I am sometimes known for my flair for the dramatic–(💁🏻♀️) but that is not a dramatic statement!
Now that I’m a mom, I’m even more thankful for the flexibility it provides every day, and SO incredibly grateful that I’ve built a business that supports my core values, and the lifestyle I want to have.
(Like, for example, how I can allow my entire day to be derailed to save an abandoned, injured BABY RACCOON I found on the sidewalk!? YES this actually happened to me on Wednesday–I didn’t get any work done but I got to spend all day on the phone with various wildlife rehabbers and drive a baby raccoon to a wildlife rescuer in Kankakee!? 😆 And not worry about getting fired? Best perk of the job ever!? Photo just for fun–he’s doing much better by the way! Yes, I also googled, “can I keep a rescued raccoon as a pet in Illinois”–the answer is unfortunately no.)
ANYWAY, I digress.
Of course, I know self-employment is not for everyone, but for those who are looking for more autonomy, more opportunity/scalability, and significantly more flexibility, I think having an online business is an incredible thing.
When I left my corporate job, it was definitely considered a “risky move” to jump into self-employment–where I could count on only myself for a paycheck. Nobody else I knew at the time was self-employed, and I’m pretty sure everyone thought I was certifiably nuts. 😆
But now, with AI rapidly changing the job landscape–I personally would argue that being self-employed, in many cases, has now become MORE secure than a traditional job!
(So if you’ve secretly been wanting to make the jump, I’m pretty sure the window of opportunity doesn’t get better than this! 👀)
I was so excited when fellow auntie (!!) Sam Vander Wielen (who built her own multi 7 figure online legal business from scratch) reached out and offered to send me her new book, When I Start My Business I’ll Be Happy: A Practical, No B.S. Guide to Entrepreneurship–I said, “of course! Sounds amazing!”
Well, me being me, it sat in my bedside book pile for a YEAR (tell me you have ADHD without telling me you have ADHD–sorry Sam!! 🤦🏻♀️) and the other day, I finally picked it up, and INHALED IT.
I immediately thought, “ANY auntie who wants to start an online business NEEDS to read this book!” I immediately DMed her and asked if she would come on a Substack Live to chat more about it, and she agreed–hooray!
Come hang out on your lunch break with Sam and me as we chat and share practical tips on building an online business. (Yes, even if you don’t have a social media following!)
