As I kneel at the foot of the roses collecting petals from the dusty earth, my ear fills with the sweet trill of the goldfinch. I stand, my palm a profusion of soft yellow-colored petals lined with peach and pink, and gaze towards the sky. Side-stepping the butterfly bush, my view expands – there! – atop the pine tree, his brilliant feathers punctuating the blue, the goldfinch shares his heart. His song is ancient and timeless at once – it is as if I am listening across lifetimes. It is a remembering. It is the sound of peace.
Each morning I walk out into the garden to connect with the earth, the air, and the light of the sun. I greet the roses, encourage the buds that are forming, breathe deeply the scent of each new bloom, and tenderly gather petals from the ground. My feet glistening with dew, I pray. Then I turn my attention toward our humble vegetable garden. The garden first took shape five years ago forming raised beds from concrete wall blocks and planks of wood. Working with the children, we planted the seedlings – which we had germinated indoors while winter released its grip – and also sowed some seeds directly into the spring earth. Although a novice, I continue to be delighted with each aspect of life blooming in the garden – whether discovering the elegant snap beans lightly strung in the shade of the generous leaves, or the heft of a beefsteak tomato that fills my palm, brimming with the light of the sun. I learn more each year about the balance of soil, water, and sunlight, and also the importance of not only space, but also the structure and form that helps each plant to thrive. Here, a trellis for the cucumbers fashioned from bamboo stakes, a tomato cage and garden twine provides searching green tendrils a place to grasp so that they can bear their fruit. There, stakes and twine to secure the zucchini, encouraging upward growth for the health of the stalk. Life is dynamic and ever-changing; the garden requires attention, care, and responsiveness. With awareness, it is a continual process of learning.
Giving form, shape, and structure creates the conditions in which the garden can thrive. Nature herself creates boundaries so that life may find its highest and fullest expression – from the thorn of the rose, to the mountains whose heights conduct the diversification and patterning of plant, aquatic, and animal life. A boundary may be a relational or energetic form. Rather than a wall of separation, a boundary is a loving structure with clearly maintained edges that create the space, the conditions in which one’s energy and creativity may thrive. This is how we tend the garden of the heart, an inner sanctum of harmony and peace. With structure we create the conditions in which love flows, and is continually renewed – conditions in which we may return with ease to the heart, aligning with this place of steadiness, drinking deeply from this well of peace, and strengthening our capacity to be present – here and now – with ourselves and with each other, for however this day is inviting our attention, our care, our tending.
My own experiences have been great teachers in the essential nature of this tending. I discovered a pattern: rather than honoring my own well-being and capacity to give, I would often compromise an energetic boundary in an effort to prove my care or commitment to others. The exhaustion I felt in my body helped me to recognize the pattern. With this insight, I am more empowered to maintain energetic boundaries. With attention, I gain the clarity to align the way I respond with care, honoring my own capacity. Mindfully, I maintain the structure of relationship – with myself and others – and this structure provides stability. This structure considers my own needs and supports my alignment, providing the space for cycles of rest, rooting, and growth; rather than overextension, this structure encourages a loving reciprocity. We may bear and share the fruits of love, but giving without receiving is not sustainable – we must tend the garden of our own hearts, extending love to our own self, with care: what brings ease? what nourishes? what strengthens? In tending the garden of my heart, I create the conditions of balance in which I can grow in my embodiment of love; this love may then flow through me and into the world. This love is the life-generative light that shines and supports growth. Love and boundaries are not mutually exclusive; with structure and form, we create the conditions in which not only love, but also life, may flourish. May we trust this process as we faithfully tend the garden of our hearts. Whether in times of sweetness or strife, may we continually return to this present moment, and through this, find our way back to the Heart, and each other.
Across from his bright body, Mother Moon, now a waning crescent, offers her loving presence in quiet stillness. High above, Mother Moon to my left; the goldfinch to my right. Here, below, I stand, the earth at my feet. At the center, the gift of the rose fills my left palm. Feeling the symmetry of this trinity, my right hand floats, unbidden, to my heart center. I stand within this alignment, breathing, receiving. And as the goldfinch lifts from the tip of the pine, I feel gratitude for this bestowal of Grace. Moments like this, of perfect synchronicity, are the sweet fruit of summer, refreshing and nourishing the soul. Moments like these weave us closer to the Mystery.
Affirmation:
“I honor my boundaries with love and care, creating the space for my energy and creativity to flourish. In tending the garden of my heart, I nurture peace and allow love to flow through me, enriching both my life and the lives of those around me.”
Daily Practice:
Each day, take a moment to pause and breathe deeply, placing one hand on your heart. Reflect on what truly nourishes you and what boundaries you need to set to maintain your well-being. Practice a small boundary act, such as choosing a moment of rest, pausing before responding, or gently saying no to preserve your energy. As you do this, visualize yourself as a thriving garden, with each boundary like a trellis that supports your growth and allows love to bloom.
