Meal Prep Shortcuts: New Mom Edition

Jessica Bippen · NOURISHED.

My sister-in-law recently had her second baby (he’s soooo cute!!!) and as soon as we got the call that baby was here, I start a postpartum meal prep. Because those first few days with a newborn feel like a blur and often the mom is so focused on carrying for the newborn that feeding herself is an after thought.

So instead of asking, “what do you need” or “how can I help” I wanted to take something off her plate. Even if it was as simple as what to eat.

This meal prep shortcut, is less of a “shortcut” perse and more of a meal and snack prep that’s nourishing for a postpartum mom. It’s for no-thinking-required, ready to ready-to-eat food that she can reach for at 2pm when she hasn’t eaten since 7am and the baby finally fell asleep.

A quick note on postpartum nutrition... a newly postpartum mom just did something extraordinary. Whether she delivered vaginally or via c-section, she lost blood, she’s rebuilding tissue and her hormones are going through one of the most dramatic shifts of her entire life. Plus, if she’s nursing she’s producing milk around the clock. Her nutrient needs are higher postpartum than they were even during pregnancy. Protein, iron, omega-3s, collagen, healthy fats, complex carbs... all of it matters more right now than it ever has. Let me know if you want a full post on this!

The goal with this prep isn’t a scheduled meal train with coordinated drop offs or full meals for the whole family. It’s more flexible than that. I did the heavy lifting. She or her family can eat what she wants when she wants it without anything going to waste. No pressure to use it all at once because it can easily be frozen. This means no meals going to waste because the timing didn’t work out.

Now let’s get into everything I made.

PB Protein Energy Bites

These are the perfect new mom snack. Packed with healthy fats, complex carbs and a boost of protein. I used collagen which adds an extra layer of postpartum support, as it’s one of the most important nutrients for tissue repair, gut lining healing, and skin recovery after birth.

Makes approximately 15 bites
