Irrigation Hijinks, 1972; Central High School, Phoenix, Ariz., May 2072.

It wasn’t until I left Arizona for college that I came to realize how odd it was that my high school and my home were flooded with irrigation water on a regular basis. My home’s subdivision was built on a former grapefruit grove and we had six grapefruit trees in our yard. We also had berms around the perimeter of our yard, which I have also come to realize is not “normal.”

To this day I cannot stand the taste of grapefruit.
