Religion, morality, and knowledge being necessary to good government and the happiness of mankind, schools and the means of education shall forever be encouraged.

The building was originally named for Alabama governor Bibb Graves when it opened in 1929. Graves was a Ku Klux Klan member and his name was removed from the building in 2022. It was then named for Dr. Autherine Lucy Foster, the first African American to attend the University. (She was known by her maiden name when she broke the University’s color barrier in 1956 and preferred the building use that name.)
