18 of the Most Shocking TV Moments Ever

Great television thrives on its ability to shock us completely.

You’ve got your brutal betrayals, your terrifying surprise jump-out-of-your-skin times, maybe some unexpected and totally devastating character deaths, maybe a plot twist to end all plot twists…

So here, I’m looking back at 18 of the most unbelievable, shocking moments from modern-day television history that left us (aka me) utterly stunned.

As with all my listicles and fun round-ups, these are just what I personally love. Please feel free to share in the comments your own favourites and suggestions for others to enjoy!

Unavoidably, there will be huge spoilers ahead. I’ve only listed the TV show and episode title in the header (not the moment itself) so you can hopefully quickly scroll on if you’ve not seen the show and don’t want it ruined!

First, let’s start with some shocking reveals and plot twist episodes…

First aired: June 3rd, 2013

Shocking moment/storyline: When Walder Frey (David Bradley) betrays the Stark family at the Red Wedding, locking the banquet doors before slaughtering Robb Stark (Richard Madden), his pregnant wife Talisa (Oona Chaplin), and his mother Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley).

Starting strong with the episodes of all episodes: The Red Wedding.

I binged Game of Thrones for the first time a few years ago, and I remember going into work the next day after watching this episode, and being like OH MY GOD, please can someone talk to me about what just happened.

Even if you knew what was coming from the books, seeing this specific sequence play out on screen was a massive moment for pop culture. It was a masterclass in building a sense of immediate, inescapable dread, and shocked doesn’t even begin to cover it. Wowzer.

First aired: December 1st, 2004

Shocking moment/storyline: When it’s revealed that Ethan Rom (William Mapother) was not on Oceanic Flight 815, after Hurley (Jorge Garcia) does the census of all the survivors of the crash.

We've got a problem. The manifest, Jack, the census, the names of everyone who survived, all 46 of us. I interviewed everyone. Here, at the beach, got their names. One them, one of them isn't... Jack! One of them isn't in the manifest. He wasn't on the plane.

I know they’d alluded to there being others on the island before this moment, of course, but there was just something about having it fully confirmed that really creeped me out. I remember just having that woah feeling: like stomach drop, help sort of reaction.

To me, it was a brill, spine-chilling moment that turned everything upside down in an instant. As then you knew, they weren’t alone, and you had no idea what was going to happen next. Ooh so good.

First aired: March 26th, 2017

Shocking moment/storyline: When DCI Roz Huntley (Thandiwe Newton), left for dead by Tim Ifield (Jason Watkins) and lying on plastic sheeting as he gets ready to dispose of her body with a chainsaw, suddenly opens her eyes.

Admittedly, maybe this one you have to take with a slight pinch of salt, because I’m not quite sure how he didn’t realise she wasn’t dead… but still, when her eyes suddenly opened, I was SHOCKED. What a twist.

And it was such a brilliant end-of-episode scene because suddenly, the person you thought was finished is back in the game, and you immediately need to watch that next episode.

Line of Duty featured on my shows I wish I could watch again for the first time for very moments like this.

First aired: September 21st, 2017

Shocking moment/storyline: When Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell) figures out that the neighbourhood they are living in is an elaborate psychological torture chamber, realising they are not in heaven at all as Michael (Ted Danson) reveals his true evil nature.

It took me a while to figure it out, but just now as we were all fighting, yelling at each other and each one of us demanding we should go to the Bad Place, I thought to myself, “Man, this is torture.” And then it hit me: they’re never gonna call a train to take us to the Bad Place. They can’t... because we’re already here. *This* is the Bad Place.

Such a mic drop moment.

This has to be one of the cleverest plot twists in sitcom history, complemented by some next-level acting by Ted Danson. The fact the whole concept of the show flips on its head in one speech, and somehow still makes complete sense looking back, is a real feat of writing.

I love a TV show plot twist that makes you immediately want to restart from episode one, and this is one of the best examples I can think of.

First aired: December 25th, 2024

Shocking moment/storyline: When Smithy (James Corden) finally leaves the altar during his wedding to Sonia (Laura Aikman), choosing to follow his heart instead.

Gavin & Stacey has become such a massive part of British pop culture, and so everyone was eagerly awaiting Christmas Day 2024 when we’d finally get the answer to the question Nessa (Ruth Jones) popped all those years ago…

And it looked like Smithy was going to go ahead with marrying Sonia after all, then it all turns on its head.

We're messy and not perfect. But I love you Nessa and I always have. Well, not always, but most of the time… I love you, will you marry me?

It was the plot twist we all wanted, but one that shocked us nonetheless!

First aired: April 22nd, 2013

Shocking moment/storyline: When the mild-mannered stay-at-home dad Joe Miller (Matthew Gravelle) is unmasked as the killer of eleven-year-old Danny Latimer (Oskar McNamara), right under the nose of his own wife, lead detective DS Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman).

I love a murder show (Midsomer Murders and Vera fan right here) but I didn’t figure this one out.

Before this reveal, Broadchurch had done such a good job of making everyone feel like a possibility while also making Joe blend into the background, so when it was revealed, it came as a huge surprise. Olivia Colman’s performance in that reveal scene is incredible as well. You can feel the disbelief, heartbreak, and anger all at once.

Always who you least expect…

Now, let’s look at some downright frightening shocks.

First aired: July 2nd, 2013

Shocking moment/storyline: When we saw the killer had been lying in wait under the bed, and when the woman closed her eyes, he silently slithers out.

Oh boy, this really got me. I binged this show during lockdown, as I hadn’t seen it before, and I just couldn’t cope with this. I don’t think I slept very well that night.

Because if we’re talking about shocking scenes, it’s hard to get over that instant fear that happens when he appears out from under the bed; a terrifying visual that you really wish you could unsee.

Apparently, it got heaps of other people too, as Idris Elba (who played the title character John Luther) reported that a few bed companies complained saying that they could no longer sell beds with gaps underneath it because everyone was so freaked out!

First aired: October 14th, 2010

Shocking moment/storyline: When the latex-suited killer Sqweegel (Daniel Browning Smith) is shown to be living inside people’s houses, occupying the hidden recesses of their lofts and crawlspaces for days on end without them knowing.

If you thought Luther was bad, this episode of CSI was pure nightmare fuel.

Instead of lying in wait for the person to get home, this killer was actually living inside people’s houses for days before he murdered them. So imagine you’re just chilling, living your life at home, and there’s someone literally living in your loft, or in the walls.

And when he appears from the ceiling, in that creepy black latex suit, oh god, it’s just one of those TV moments you know you will never forget. (Unfortunately, because it still terrifies me now!)

First aired: May 20th, 2010

Shocking moment/storyline: When a grieving widower, Gary Clark (Michael O’Neill), enters Seattle Grace Hospital with a handgun to seek revenge on the doctors, sparking a full hospital lockdown.

We all know that Greys Anatomy loves to take you on an emotional rollercoaster, but the season six finale was the best because you just had no idea what was going to happen next.

Who would live? Who would die?

It was tense and super stressful throughout, but I have to say that the ultimate “oh my god” moment happens when he dragged Bailey (Chandra Wilson) out from under the bed. Okay, I’m really not going to sleep tonight either with this talk about things happening under beds lol.

Speaking of not knowing who would die… Moving on to some devastating and shocking TV deaths from over the years.

First aired: March 30th, 2020

Shocking moment/storyline: When Dr. Neil Melendez (Nicholas Gonzalez) passes away from severe internal organ damage and sepsis after being struck by falling rubble during a massive earthquake.

TV shows love to do that thing when they throw you off the scent, and I was totally had by this one.

During the chaos of the earthquake, everyone is running around trying to save people, and Melendez appears completely fine, doing his job as usual. Then, out of absolutely nowhere, he collapses.

I didn’t figure out that he was hurt at all, and I was DEVASTATED when the truth hit. Especially as I was really rooting for him and Claire (Antonia Thomas) to get it together, and they never got their happy ending!

First aired: October 24th, 2016

Shocking moment/storyline: When Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) uses his barbed-wire baseball bat to brutally beat Abraham Ford (Michael Cudlitz) to death, before unexpectedly turning and executing Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun).

I’m pretty sure this one got us all.

The Abraham reveal was shocking enough on its own, but then the episode completely pulls the rug out from under you. As you’re sitting there thinking … surely that’s it? And then realising, no, they’re doing this too. They’re going to brutally murder Glenn. Wowzer.

Whatever your personal feelings are about how this played out, you can’t deny it was a completely unforgettable, shocking moment that has cemented itself in television history.

First aired: December 25th, 2012

Shocking moment/storyline: When Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens) is unexpectedly killed in a head-on motor car collision on his drive home from the hospital, mere moments after celebrating the birth of his newborn son with Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery).

Merry Christmas, folks! This was a classic British television moment that basically ruined Christmas Day for millions of households back in 2012.

The shock comes from the absolute whiplash of the scene. After everything Lady Mary and Matthew had been through, to have Matthew driving back from the hospital, celebrating becoming a dad, and then… BAM. A sudden, violent head-on collision out of absolutely nowhere.

Apparently, Dan Stevens hadn’t wanted to renew his contract, which is why it had to happen, but still… way to ruin the festivities, Downton.

First aired: December 13, 2009

Shocking moment/storyline: When Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) returns home after successfully defeating Arthur Mitchell (John Lithgow), only to discover that the Trinity Killer had already visited his house and murdered his wife Rita Morgan (Julie Benz).

Dexter finding Rita in the bathtub is easily one of the most haunting images from 2000s television.

For me, TV shows that have moments like this are incredible, because you get lulled into a false of security. You think things are wrapping up, that everything is going to be fine, and then it all changes in an instant. You get thrown off the ride mid-air, and you’re like what just happened.

The idea that Arthur had already made one final move before his death never even crossed my mind, and the sheer horror of Dexter realising what has happened is absolutely heartbreaking. Nooooo, not Rita.

First aired: March 11th, 2012

Shocking moment/storyline: When loan shark Donny (Sal Landi) shoots and kills Mike Delfino (James Denton) outside his own home in the last season of the show.

So Desperate Housewives decided to kill off the love of my life. Thanks a lot, Rachel. Thanks a lot.

The scene itself is horrible because it’s so sudden. There’s just this ordinary moment outside their house that turns tragic in seconds, and I was fully expecting Mike to be okay because TV teaches you to expect a last-minute save and then… nope.

This hit me like a ton of bricks, and I will never get over it. I remember just sitting there staring at the screen thinking WHAT. DO NOT DO THIS TO ME.

Sad, sad times.

Finally, you can’t talk about shocking TV moments without throwing a few classic British soap storylines in there, so let’s wrap up with some of the best.

First aired: October 2008 (week long)

Shocking moment/storyline: When a vengeful Niall Rafferty (Barry Sloane) traps his biological family inside a church rigged with explosives, forcing his long-lost mother Myra McQueen (Nicole Barber-Lane) to choose which of her children will be allowed to walk free.

Niall asked Myra six questions, and for every one she answered wrong, one of her children had to die. As she only got two right, Mercedes (Jennifer Metcalfe) and John Paul (James Sutton) offered themselves up to save their siblings, and then Myra is left to choose between the rest.

How do you do that? How do you pick between your kids? It was so agonising to watch, and I had no idea who she was going to go with.

Hollyoaks has had some shockers over the years, and back between 2007-2009, I would say it was in its prime. I used to watch it after school every day, and this storyline has survived brain recycling after brain recycling ever since, so it had to go on the list.

First aired: December 31st, 2001

Shocking moment/storyline: When Little Mo Morgan (Kacey Ainsworth), trapped in a violent marriage, finally turns on her abusive husband Trevor (Alex Ferns) and hits him over the head with an iron.

New Years Eve 2001 is definitely one for the shocking soap moments hall of fame. We were all completely taken aback when Little Mo finally fought back against Trevor, who had been physically, emotionally, and sexually abusing her for a long time, and, of course, we were so happy to see her do so.

The scene was so well done too, as you think you’re going to watch another horrific abuse happen, but then Little Mo grabs the iron, and, well, the rest, as they say, is history.

As we’d already watched Trevor burn Little Mo’s hand with an iron previously, it was the perfect, fitting object to have him meet his end. See ya, Trev.

First aired: November 16th, 2000

Shocking moment/storyline: The Sugdens are suffering financial trouble, so young Andy (Kelvin Fletcher) decides to set fire to the barn, so they can claim the insurance money. However, his mum, Sarah (Alyson Spiro), was in the barn with her secret lover, Richie Carter (Glenn Lamont), and although Richie manages to escape, Sarah gets trapped. The barn explodes, and she dies.

When soaps go big, they go big, and so you’re shocked when Andy actually goes ahead with setting the fire, then shocked when Richie escapes, shocked when Jack (Clive Hornby) tries to go in to save Sarah, and then shocked again when the explosion happens, and you realise there’s no way Sarah is making it out alive (even in soap land).

Poor little Andy just wanted to help his dad pay the bills, and instead, he accidentally caused one of the biggest tragedies in the village. It was total devastation, and the fallout for the Sugden family lasted for years.

First aired: January 13th, 2003

Shocking moment/storyline: When serial killer Richard Hillman (Brian Capron) attacks Maxine Peacock (Tracy Shaw) with a crowbar and murders her on her own hallway floor after she walks in and catches him attempting to kill Emily Bishop (Eileen Derbyshire).

“You should have stayed at the party, Maxine.”

This line is etched into the minds of Corrie fans across the UK. We can all picture the scene, and it was that shocking realisation that a) Richard was planning to kill Emily, and b) he was really was going to kill Maxine.

Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time. It was an absolutely brutal moment. Richard Hillman is one of the best soap bad guys ever, and this storyline, with all its twists and turns, delivered shocking down to a tee.
