Slow January

This month as I’ve settled in to a slower routine, I’ve thought about how different each household is run. Each family is so unique in the way they run their lives, and it is fascinating to me to think that our priorities, our parents, our age, and our location have all influenced the way we move about our day. We are all so unique, and I love the beauty of our differences. There is beauty there, but there is also the ugliness of sin in our lives. We get bitter, lazy, or selfish as we move throughout our days and it is so good to look for beauty around us and enjoy each season we live through.

So now, I chart my course for the year. A year filled with books, bread, and beauty.

Okay, enough rambling thoughts for today though.

I just finished reading Charlotte’s Web aloud and Eli loved this book. He loved that a spider was a main character and always wanted to see pictures of Charlotte.

The ladies in our church have a book club, and this month we are reading The Princess and the Goblin. I had never read George MacDonald, and I loved it! I ordered the next book already.

Getting delivered today is Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell. I’ve watched part of this show, but I new this classic needed to live on my shelves, so I’ll be starting it today.

I jumped into making sourdough this month. I’ve found that I really enjoy fresh bread, don’t you? But it has been a fabulous experiment to develop better skills in the kitchen. I’ve make two kinds of loafs from this cookbook, and they have both turned out great! My first attempt was a complete disaster and the brick loaf got tossed directly in the trash.

Today I finished making croissants. (Do you know, that word took me years to get the spelling correct on the first try?!) It is quite the process, and more involved than sourdough, but my first attempt wasn’t a total failure. It wasn’t a total success either. Maybe I’ll make them again next weekend. Maybe it will turn out better, but it might not and that’s okay too. I don’t expect to make professional looking croissants on the first few tries, and I’ll be trying it again. Mostly because I LOVE to eat them.
