Shadow

Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published

I look up at the branches towering above
In the very place you lived.

I sense you as I walk this land
As I absorb the juicy greenness all around.

But I feel you most when gazing up at the leaves
As the sun shines through, revealing shadows of foliage unseen.

You echo, your shadow is here.
And all I have to do is slow down, open my eyes, and see.

I wrote the poem above at the Disibodenberg Monastery last month as I sought to give words to the strong sense I had of Hildegard’s presence there. And then I looked up, and the words I struggled to find came instead through the image of the leaves (seen above).

If you’d like to have your own Hildegard experience in nature, join me this Saturday, July 18 for a Pilgrimage in Place just outside of Seattle. We will wander and discover what lies in the green places, inspired by Hildegard’s theology of greening (Viriditas).

Feeling intrigued by the life and ministry of Hildegard of Bingen? Or perhaps you’re drawn to the road of St. James (i.e., Camino de Santiago)?

Tentative dates have been released for my 2027 calendar. Click the button below to receive information once registration is live.

Keep Me Posted

Spend some time savoring the summer season on a local pilgrimage with Hildegard of Bingen on Saturday, July 18. Mystic, doctor, botanist (and more), Hildegard often looked to nature as a way of understanding God's loving work with all creation. This unique pilgrimage experience will invite you to bear witness to the leafy, greenness of summer, by walking in and engaging with nature.
