This morning, the news this fandom has been waiting decades for finally dropped.
Amazon MGM Studios announced it is developing a live-action Jem and the Holograms series. The project is being produced by Kilter Films -- the production company founded by Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, the duo behind Westworld and Fallout -- in partnership with Hasbro Entertainment. No casting, no release date, and no showrunner have been announced yet, but the trade coverage has been significant. Variety, Deadline, and several other major outlets picked up the story within hours of the announcement.
For those of us who have been in this fandom for a while, the reaction is... complicated. Exciting, obviously. But also the kind of cautious optimism that comes from having loved something for a long time. We remember 2015. We remember what happens when the essence of Jem gets lost in translation, when the hologram tech becomes a YouTube channel, the rock star becomes a reluctant influencer, and the fandom becomes toxic. We’ve had that conversation at JemCon more times than we can count.
What gives us genuine hope this time is the team attached to it. Joy and Nolan know how to build worlds with emotional depth and moral complexity -- which is exactly what Jem and the Holograms was at its best. Underneath all the pink hair and the neon and the “Truly Outrageous” earworms, this was a show about identity, ambition, family, and what it costs to be everything to everyone. “The Real Me” wasn’t just a song title. It was the whole thesis.
If the new series remembers that - if it lets Jerrica be as interesting as Jem - there’s something genuinely special here.
Hasbro’s involvement is also worth noting. The original series was created to sell dolls, yes, but it was also given remarkable creative freedom by Hasbro at the time. Series creator Christy Marx has spoken about how hands-off they were, how much room she had to write real stories about real things - runaway hotlines, addiction, grief, found family. A 41-year anniversary moment feels like an opportunity to honor that legacy rather than flatten it.
