In the early 1980s, my dad, a builder and real estate broker, found himself in one of the toughest seasons of his life. The economy shifted, projects stalled, and he was forced to sell off land and assets he had worked years to build. It was a time when everything felt uncertain and asking him to help pay for college simply wasn’t an option.
So, I did what many people do when life turns left: I figured out another way.
I enrolled in a local community college because it was what I could afford. And shortly after starting, I discovered something that would change the course of my future: if I became a parliamentarian in student government, tuition would be free.
Free college? That was all the motivation I needed.
I ran for student government, not because I dreamed of politics, not because I was the most qualified , but because I was determined. I knew education mattered, and I wasn’t going to let circumstances decide my future. I won the position, earned the free tuition, and after two years, transferred my credits to the University of Colorado Boulder.
There was just one problem.
I had never been to Colorado.
I wasn’t particularly close with my family at the time, I figured it was as good a place as any for a fresh start. So, my friend and I packed up a car, pointed it west, and drove across the country toward a life neither of us could picture yet.
When I arrived in Colorado, I learned quickly that out-of-state tuition was… painful. So, I did what I had always done: I found a way. I figured out how to establish residency, lowered my costs, and finished my degree. Not because it was easy. Not because everything lined up perfectly. But because I refused to quit on myself.
Looking back, that season of life taught me one of the greatest lessons I’ve ever learned:
When you don’t know how to create the future you want… you figure it out anyway.

Real estate has always been a business that rewards problem-solvers… people who don’t wait for perfect conditions, but create opportunity in spite of them.
