What do Albert Einstein, A Quiet Place: Day One, Mister Rogers, and dystopian literature have to do with each other? They’re each a part of the answer to this question: How can the humanities help us build joyous, just lives in a world that is seemingly collapsing under the weight of pain, injustice, and despair?
This summer I’m hitting the road to answer that very question in five talks across five communities in five weeks: On June 21, I explain Albert Einstein’s perspective on how the humanities fill gaps science cannot. On June 29, I discuss the movie A Quiet Place: Day One and what it teaches us about the art of living.
On July 5, I show how leaving animals out of our diet not only brings us into alignment with our own values but also enhances our health. On July 12, I calculate the costs of male privilege and consider what Mister Rogers can teach us about healthy, humane masculinity. Finally, on July 19, I argue that the humanities are a powerful resource for confronting and combating demoralization and feelings of futility.

Topic: The Limits of Science: Why Einstein Believed Science Needs the Humanities
